LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 28 Virginia Tech women’s cross country team finished in third place at the 2014 Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic while the men’s team posted a fourth place finish on Saturday morning.
Senior Paige Kvartunas posted her best-ever time in the women’s 5K and was the Hokies’ first finisher with a time of 17:09.92. Kvartunas finished in seventh place while senior teammate Sarah Rapp posted a 14th place finish with a time of personal best time of 17:19.64.
Senior Amanda Smith finished next for the Hokies in 56th place with a personal best of 18:02.65. Sophomore Shannon Morton and senior Hillary Krein were the Hokies’ next finishers in 65th and 67th places, respectively. Morton finished with a personal best time of 18:07.99 while Krein crossed the finish line at 18:09.17.
Seniors Madalyn Nuckols and Katarina Smiljanec were the last two Hokies to score finishing in 96th and 105th places, respectively. Nuckols posted a time of 18:19.67 and Smiljanec finished in 18:23.26. In all, four Hokie women posted personal bests at the meet.
The men, who posted a fourth place finish overall, were paced by sophomore Stuart Robertson, whose personal-best time of 24:22.51 at the 8K distance made him the Hokies’ top finisher in 14th place. Just behind him was sophomore Neil Gourley, who finished in 19th place with a personal best of 24:31.34.
Next to cross the finish line for Tech was freshman Andrew Gaiser. Gaiser finished in 34th place overall with a time of 24:45.10 while junior Darren Barlow finished with a time of 24:50.06; good for a 38th place finish.
Junior George Carter finsished in 56th place with a time of 25:03.63 while freshman Daniel Jaskowak posted a 65th place finish with a time of 25:11.71. The Hokies’ final scorer was freshman Brent Mussleman with a time of 25:27.29; good for an 87th place finish overall.
Next up for the Hokies is the Princeton Invite on Saturday, Oct. 18. Two weeks later, the Hokies will head to Charlottesville, Virginia for the ACC Championships hosted by the University of Virginia.
