THE HOKIE
SCHOLARSHIP FUND

A Message from
the Director of Athletics

Greetings Hokie Nation,

Thank you for your support of Virginia Tech Athletics and our student-athletes! Whether you are a longtime member renewing your commitment, or a new supporter, the importance that your contribution plays in advancing opportunities for our current student-athletes and helping to build the future of Virginia Tech Athletics cannot be overstated. It is our goal and vision to become the preeminent program in the Atlantic Coast Conference and nationally celebrated in all facets.

However, our desire to be the best academically and athletically will not be possible without the continued help of Hokie Nation. This donor guide outlines a plan that will play a significant role in the future success of Virginia Tech Athletics. When the Virginia Tech Student Aid Association was first established in 1949, it was founded on the sole premise of providing scholarships for the student-athletes of Virginia Tech. It is vital to the future of Virginia Tech Athletics that scholarships continue to be the most important resource we provide our student-athletes, and for that reason, I am pleased to introduce our donors to the new programmatic structure of the Hokie Club.

The new Hokie Scholarship Fund program (detailed in the following pages) will bring us back to our roots of providing the young men and women who represent Virginia Tech Athletics ample opportunity to be successful first and foremost in the classroom, but also in competition and the community. As the landscape of college athletics has evolved over the last two decades, the financial investment required to provide scholarships for our student-athletes is at an all-time high. Due to increases in tuition, fees, and cost of attendance, the athletics scholarship bill for the 2015-2016 school year totals approximately $14 million, up from $8.9 million five years ago. With this in mind, I ask that every member of the Hokie Nation consider making an impact and giving through the Hokie Scholarship Fund program.

As you review this donor guide book, you will notice some improvements and modernizations. These new procedures apply a process that is fair, equitable, donor-centered, consistent with our ACC and Power 5 peers, and encourages involvement regardless of whether or not you desire season tickets.

If any questions arise while becoming acclimated with the material, please do not hesitate to contact the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund at (540) 231-6618 or hokieclub@vt.edu.

Finally, I would like to personally thank you for everything you have done and will continue to do to strengthen Virginia Tech Athletics. We are Strong Together! The future is bright, and together we can help prepare Champions for Life.

Thanks Again & Go Hokies!

The Future Support Of
Virginia Tech Student-Athletes

With the education and development of our student-athletes at the core of the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund, the progression and evolution of the Hokie Club will create a more sustainable model and enable Virginia Tech Athletics to continue to grow and be a national leader.

Currently, Virginia Tech is one of only a few schools within the ACC and the Power Five conferences that does not participate in a “per-seat” priority seating program in order to raise annual scholarship funds. Virginia Tech is also one of the few schools nationally that has not raised its annual donor giving levels over a significant period of time. Therefore, annual scholarship fund donations have remained fairly flat, while the cost to provide scholarships has rapidly increased.

Under the new Hokie Scholarship Fund program, season tickets in both Lane Stadium and Virginia Tech Carilion Court at Cassell Coliseum will have an annual per-seat minimum gift requirement that varies based upon section or location. With approximately 75 percent of scholarship funding coming from priority seating for football and men’s basketball, the Hokie Scholarship Fund program will provide an invaluable resource for Tech Athletics. Both Lane Stadium and Virginia Tech Carilion Court at Cassell Coliseum will undergo reseatings for the 2017 seasons.

* Previous reseatings occurred in 2004 and 2012

The Current Picture

The Changing NCAA Landscape

The landscape of intercollegiate athletics has vastly changed over the past two decades, as has the financial investment required to achieve excellence and to win championships. As the cost of scholarships has continued to rise, so too have expenses such as equipment, travel, nutrition, student-athlete development, strength and conditioning, and recruiting. We must grow and enhance our Hokie Club membership to continue our positive momentum.

VIRGINIA TECH VS THE ACC

There is strength in numbers: Building a championship culture starts with a strong commitment from our alumni and friends. Currently, Virginia Tech ranks 11th of 14 ACC members in annual scholarship fund dollars raised and fifth in total number of donors to athletics. NC State, Clemson and Florida State each have more than 20,000 athletic donors, which is double that of Virginia Tech. Also, while ALL friends of Virginia Tech are encouraged to participate, it should be noted only four percent of living Virginia Tech alumni currently give back to athletics. This ranks tied for 11th among our ACC peers. The following pages detail how you can personally make an impact and help us to be “strong together”! It is about our student-athletes; it is about competing at the highest levels.

Scholarships

For the 2014–15 academic year, the scholarship bill totaled approximately $13 million, the highest mark in school history, and the annual scholarship fund dollars raised combined with the earnings from the athletic endowment were not enough to pay for the total expense ($9.8 million revenue from scholarship donations). Should this trend continue, Virginia Tech risks being placed at a disadvantage to other nationally prominent programs.

Thank you to all our Hokie Club members for your continued generosity. Your support is invaluable to the ongoing success of Virginia Tech Athletics. While it’s easy to measure the cost of room and board or tuition, it’s impossible to quantify the value of a Virginia Tech education. Thanks to you, our student-athletes will experience moments they’ll cherish forever as they learn invaluable life lessons about themselves, teamwork and their field of study.

The New Hokie Scholarship Fund Program

The new Hokie Scholarship Fund program is designed to address the need for increased funding for annual scholarship support of Hokie student-athletes.
All gifts given through this program will go directly to scholarship support. The overall program includes a new priority seating and parking program, exclusive donor benefits, priority point system, and a new and improved benefit
allocation process.

With the goal of elevating Virginia Tech Athletics’ ability to compete for championships while better meeting the needs of our student-athletes, the Hokie Scholarship Fund program comes as the result of more than a year of extensive research and analysis that included data collection from donors/season ticket holders, ACC peer institution review, a focus group, a national review of Power Five Conference institutions and a comprehensive look at schools recently implementing major football and/or men’s basketball priority seating changes.

How Scholarship Seating Will Work
Beginning in 2017, football and men’s basketball season ticket holders seated in designated “scholarship sections” throughout Lane Stadium and Cassell Coliseum will be asked to contribute a minimum per-seat scholarship gift each year to secure a priority location for season tickets for football and/or men’s basketball. Gift amounts will vary based on location within the stadium/coliseum.

The Hokie Club is also introducing a new and easier to understand priority point program and annual giving benefits chart that will present donors with additional benefits based upon their giving level, including (but not limited to) parking, exclusive event invitations, and the ability to purchase postseason tickets (please see pages 16 and 17).

The Scholarship Seating Program will officially launch in 2017 (please see pages 18 and 19 for other important dates). All donors who wish to be eligible for benefits are asked to make their gift to the Hokie Scholarship Fund by the March 31st, 2017 giving deadline. Donors will then be ranked based upon their priority points for a complete reseating of Lane Stadium, which will occur in May of 2017. All donors who wish to be eligible for benefits related only to men’s basketball will be asked to make their gift by June 30th, 2017.

Benefit Allocation Process
Priority Season Ticket and Parking for Football and Men’s Basketball
Seating for season tickets in football and/or men’s basketball will be based upon your priority points and making (at least) the minimum gift annually for “scholarship seat” locations. Parking will be based upon your priority points and meeting the minimum giving level to be eligible for a donor’s desired zone for football (please see pages 22-23). Priority points will be determined based upon the Hokie Club priority point system. Similar to previous years, season ticket and parking selections will take place during your assigned time slot using Ballena online selection technology.

Seating for Single Game, Away Game, Miniplans, Neutral Site, and Postseason Tickets
Donors who give at the top three scholarship fund giving levels (Hokie Stone, Hokie Scholar, Hokie Ambassador) will receive first priority for seating for single game, away game, miniplans, neutral site and postseason tickets for football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball with the Ambassadors receiving first priority, followed by the Scholars, and finally the Hokie Stone donors. The remaining tickets (if available) will be allocated throughout all other donor giving levels based upon donors’ priority point totals.

Other Benefits
All other benefits will be allocated first based upon donors’ annual Hokie Scholarship Fund giving level and secondly based upon their priority points. Please see the Benefits Chart on page 16 for detailed information.

The New Timeline

Hokie Scholarship Fund gifts received between January 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017 will apply toward 2017 deadlines and benefits detailed throughout this website.

Scholarship Fund gifts received after the deadlines may still qualify to receive season ticket priority and opportunity to purchase parking based on availability, but will forfeit their seating and parking from the previous year.

Please note that the new priority points system will be used to recalculate your current point total and donor rankings beginning in 2017-18. Previous years of giving and purchasing season tickets will be used in the calculation. Priority points will accumulate over the lifetime of a donor. Earned points may decrease if a donor does not donate to the Hokie Scholarship Fund and/or purchase season tickets in consecutive years. In this scenario, the donor will lose the consecutive years of giving/purchase priority points previously accumulated. However, all other points accumulated will not be reduced or eliminated.

Priority Points Program

The revised and simplified Hokie Club Priority Points Program will be utilized to reward both donor loyalty and generosity. Each donor’s priority point total will determine their priority ranking and play a determining factor in how various benefits are allocated, such as:

  1. Season ticket location selection order for football and/or men’s basketball
  2. Neutral site and postseason ticket allocation including ACC championships, NCAA tournaments, and bowl games
  3. Season parking selection order for football and allocation for men’s basketball

Note: Annual Hokie Scholarship Fund giving levels will also factor into parking selections and allocations.

Hokie Club Donors will receive priority points for the following activities:

2 Pointsfor every $100 cumulative giving to Virginia Tech Athletics$
5 Pointsper consecutive year of giving to the Hokie Scholarship Fund
3 Pointsper consecutive year of purchasing season tickets
(football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball)
1 Pointper purchased season ticket (football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball)
with a maximum of 16 points accumulated per sport, per year
1 Pointper neutral site or postseason event with ticket(s) purchased
(football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball)
5 Pointsper year of membership in the Student Hokie Club
50 Pointsfor being a former Virginia Tech letterwinner (one-time bonus)
0

* Online Calculator is meant to be used as an estimate; specific donor account calculations will be made available in the upcoming months.
The first points earned for consecutive years giving and tickets would be in a donor’s second year contributing or purchasing tickets. Donors will not have technically given or purchased in consecutive years until they have occurred in back-to-back years.

gonzalez_vanessa

The scholarships given by our donors are of vital importance to the way we go about running our program. They allow us to present opportunities to young men to help them improve their lives and become not just better basketball players but better people. We are extremely fortunate to be able to work with such a caring group of donors and are thankful for their passion for Virginia Tech Athletics.

New in 2017
Hokie Scholarship Fund
Priority For Football Parking

Hokie Club parking selections for 2017 will be based upon a donor’s priority points (as of March 31, 2017), with their Hokie Scholarship Fund annual giving level determining eligibility of location and number of spots (please see pages 16-17). Donors must give a minimum of $2,500 to the Hokie Scholarship Fund to be eligible for a reserved parking space in Zone A and a minimum gift of $550 to be eligible for a pass in Zone B. This gift minimum associated with reserved parking is NOT in addition to your minimum per-seat scholarship donation. All Hokie Scholarship Fund donors will be eligible to select a space in Zone C. Parking spaces in Zone B and C will not contain reserved numbered parking spaces. In other words, the pass will provide access into the lot on game day, but not a specific/reserved parking space within that lot. Also, new in 2017, donors can now qualify to purchase multiple parking passes depending on their giving annual level. Please see benefits charts on page 16 for details.

After parking selections are completed in 2017, donors will have the first right of refusal to renew their same parking space(s) or lot for future seasons IF their giving level is maintained or increased in subsequent years (until another reseating/reparking occurs in Lane Stadium in 2020, unless otherwise notified). There will be an opportunity to relocate parking locations during non-reseating years if a donor desires, but it is not mandatory. However, should a donor’s annual giving level decrease, they will be asked to reselect parking for the upcoming season.

Hokie Scholarship Fund giving levels that qualify for multiple parking passes may choose to group passes in a Zone B parking lot (spots will not be numbered/reserved). For example, a Hokie Ambassador can choose to select four passes in Zone B, Lot 8, but the donor will then not be able to select any reserved spaces in Zone A.

If you have questions or would like further clarification, please call (540) 231-6618 or email hokieclub@vt.edu.

Donor ADA Parking

For qualifying Hokie Scholarship Fund donors, an ADA season parking pass may be purchased (based on availability) in lots 1, 2, 3 and 5 near the stadium. Due to demand, ADA parking requests are filled via a lottery. Due to increased demand for ADA accommodations, a copy of your current disabled parking placard ID card displaying your name and motor vehicle assigned number is due at the time of your order.

FAQ

How are gifts to the Hokie Scholarship Fund used?
Your gift to the Hokie Scholarship Fund will go directly to help pay for scholarships for more than 550 student-athletes at Virginia Tech. Scholarships will total $14.4 million for the 2015-2016 school year, and your gift will make a direct impact on the success of Virginia Tech student-athletes in the classroom, community and competition.

How is loyalty rewarded in the new systems?
The revised Hokie Club Priority Point Program is designed to reward loyal supporters. Because points now accumulate over a lifetime of giving rather than starting over at zero each year; loyalty and consecutive years of giving will play a bigger role in your priority ranking.

Is the Scholarship Priority Seating donation in addition to my annual gift?
No, your per seat gift will count towards your annual giving level. For example, if you choose to give at the Golden Hokie Level ($2,500) and have four tickets in section 7L of Lane Stadium ($600 per seat minimum donation required), the $2,400 total needed to cover your per seat minimum requirement is met through your gift at the Golden Hokie giving level. In addition, if you have men's basketball season tickets, so long as your per seat donation requirements for men's basketball does not exceed $2,400 you will be covered for basketball as well.

I have season tickets for football and men’s basketball, do I have to pay the per seat requirements for both sports?
No, under the new Hokie Club Scholarship Fund Priority Seating Program donors who purchase season tickets to both football and men’s basketball will only be required to make a single annual gift for seating with the higher of the two per seat requirements determining the minimum gift amount.

If I give $1,200 (Silver Hokie Level) in 2017, and want to choose four seats in a section with a $350 per seat donation requirement ($1,400 total), what do I need to do?
If based on your priority ranking, you are able to select seats in that section, you would then be asked to make an additional gift of $200 to the Hokie Scholarship Fund before or at the time of your selection, in order to be able to select those tickets for 2017. If the additional donation is not received, and you select those seats, your tickets will be held until the additional donation is received.

If I donate at the Hokie Scholar level, is there any way to have three parking passes together?
Yes. Donors who support at the In-State Hokie Scholar level ($24,367-$40,737) have the option to purchase up to three (3) parking passes in a lot in Zone B. However, they will no longer be eligible to purchase a parking pass in Zone A.

What are other ways to accumulate priority points?
Any gift made to the Hokie Club will earn two points for every $100. Other giving opportunities include planned giving, capital projects, scholarship endowments, special projects, and sport specific giving. Please visit us online at hokieclub.com or contact us at (540) 231-6618 if you are interested in any of these avenues of giving.

Is there any way I can lose my priority points?
All points related to cumulative giving, purchasing postseason or neutral site tickets, membership in the Student Hokie Club, and being a former Virginia Tech letter winner accumulate over time and will never be lost. However, points related to consecutive years of giving to the Hokie Scholarship Fund and purchasing season tickets for football or men's basketball will be lost if a donor fails to either give or purchase tickets in a consecutive given year.

Can my benefits related to giving and tickets be transferred to someone else?
All benefits related to donations and tickets (including priority points) can only be transferred to a spouse. No other immediate family members, friends, or other entities will qualify for a transfer of donor or ticket benefits.

Will there be special programs available to assist me with this transitional process?
Yes. The Hokie Club is committed to providing you with as much assistance as you may need to understand the options that will best meet your needs and desires. The options available to you include attending a local town hall informational meeting, webinars, visiting hokieclub.com for more information, and/or contacting the Hokie Club via email at hokieclub@vt.edu or phone at (540) 231-6618.

I’m not interested in purchasing season tickets, but I still want to help; why should I donate to the Hokie Scholarship Fund?
It will take support from all of Hokie Nation to help Virginia Tech Athletics grow and be recognized as one of the premier athletic departments in the country. The more support provided, the better resources we are able to provide our student-athletes to help prepare them to be Champions for Life. If you cannot make it to any athletic contests, a great way to show your Hokie pride is by donating to the Hokie Scholarship Fund.

Is my contribution to the Hokie Club contribution tax deductible?
Yes. All gifts made to the Hokie Club that receive benefits (such as priority on season tickets and parking) are 80 percent tax deductible per IRS regulations. Gifts can be made 100 percent tax deductible if the donor chooses to waive any and all benefits associated with the gift (Including season tickets and parking).

Is there somewhere I can calculate my priority points or that will tell me what they would be when I make my next gift?
Yes! Visit hokiesports.com/hokiescholarshipfund and a priority point calculator will be located there. If you have questions about whether or not you get points for something, please contact the Hokie Club at 540-231-6618 and we would be happy to walk through it with you.

How can I keep my seats and parking the same for 2018?
If you like your seats and parking, you are able to keep the same locations for both for the first time under the Hokie Scholarship Fund program. For seating, all you have to do is maintain the minimum per seat donation requirement for your seat location to retain your seats until the next reseating. However, for parking, you must maintain your annual giving level to keep your same parking space. For example, if you gave at the Platinum level in 2017, you would have to give at that level again to retain your parking space even if your per seat gift requirements are less than the platinum level. Otherwise, you could retain your seats, but you would be asked to reselect your parking.

How did the athletic department determine the per seat donation requirements for the Hokie Scholarship Fund seating program?
The Virginia Tech Athletics Department went through a process that included data collection from season seat holders, ACC peer institutions, a focus group, a national review of Power Five Conference institutions and a comprehensive look at how other successful departments execute priority seating to assess where Virginia Tech stood in relation to other nationally prominent programs. Furthermore, every seat in Lane Stadium was analyzed based on 2014 season ticket holders and donors who gave to the annual fund to determine the average value of each seat. These figures were used to determine the per seat donation requirements.

If the Hokie Scholar and Hokie Ambassador levels reflect the current scholarship costs for an in-state and out-of-state student athlete will they change each year?
The Hokie Scholar and Hokie Ambassador levels will reflect the current cost of a scholarship. Therefore, they are subject to change each year as the cost to provide a scholarship fluctuates.

Will my gift to the Round Ball Club still count for Hokie Club Credit?
A gift to the Round Ball Club (or any sport specific fund) will receive cumulative credit for priority point purposes. Only gifts made directly to the Hokie Scholarship Fund will count for per seat donation requirements or annual giving levels based upon the benefit chart.

What happens if I purchase season tickets after the March 31 deadline and is there a per seat donation associated with my seats?
Yes. You are still more than welcome to both donate to the Hokie Scholarship Fund and purchase season tickets after March 31. There will still be a per seat donation requirement, and you will be eligible to receive any benefits that have not already been fulfilled throughout the remainder of that calendar year. However, when renewing your season tickets and Hokie Scholarship Fund donation, you will be asked to make your gift prior to the March 31 giving deadline.

I give to my endowed scholarship every year. Will that still count for my scholarship gift?
Gifts made to scholarship endowments are still very much appreciated and play an important role in the long-term success of Virginia Tech Athletics. You will continue to receive cumulative priority points (which are used to determine seat and parking selection in reseating years) for gifts made to endowments (capital campaigns, facility projects, sport specific, etc), but only gifts made directly to the Hokie Scholarship Fund will count for annual benefits.

How will the gifts to the Hokie Scholarship Fund be credited with the entire university?
As with any gift made to the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund, gifts made to the Hokie Scholarship Fund will be recognized by University Development and count towards any recognition societies as well as cumulative giving to Virginia Tech.

Why does my entire per seat donation for my premium club seat not count toward my annual Hokie Scholarship Fund giving level?
Premium seating options in Lane Stadium are some of the best ways to take in the action on game days. Per seat gifts for premium seating are split with 25% going to the Hokie Scholarship Fund and 75% going to capital improvements. The portion going toward capital improvements allows the athletic department to pay off the debt owed from constructing the building and give you access to the various benefits and amenities in the premium seating areas.

If I give $2,500 am I guaranteed a parking spot in Zone A for football?
No. The minimum gift amounts associated with parking zones are just to be eligible to park in those lots. Donors will be able to select their parking based upon their priority points (in conjunction with purchasing season tickets). Lots in Zone A may become full before a donor who gave $2,500 is able to select their parking depending upon the number of donors who give at that level and their priority ranking. In which case, the donor will be asked to select a spot in Zone B or Zone C.

Will the scholarship bill be covered through the per seat donation requirements in Lane Stadium and Virginia Tech Carilion Court at Cassell Coliseum?
No. A significant portion of the scholarship bill will likely be covered through gifts associated with seating at Lane Stadium and Virginia Tech Carilion Court at Cassell Coliseum. However, it will take the support of the entire Hokie Nation to be able to provide the necessary funding to pay for student-athlete scholarships. Anyone can make an impact on our student-athletes by making a gift to the Hokie Scholarship Fund. You do not have to purchase tickets in order to participate.

How does the new Hokie Scholarship Fund Priority Point Ranking work? How do I ensure that I am ranked for priority seat selection for football?
The new Hokie Scholarship Fund Priority Point system rewards loyalty and generosity to Virginia Tech Athletics. In order to be ranked, donors need to be sure to make a gift of at least $100 to the Hokie Scholarship Fund before March 31, 2017. This gift will activate priority points and ranking for 2017-18 benefits, including priority seat selection and parking.
