Stone sets a pair of Tech records on final day of ACC Championships

Freshman distance swimmer with new marks in 1650 and 1000

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech put up a pair of top-10 finishes in the mile on the final day of the 2018 ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships as freshman Lane Stone and junior Michael Craddock finished eighth and ninth, respectively, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Stone took eighth in a program record setting time of 14:55.50. He broke the previous mark of 14:57.58 set by Jake Ores in 2015. In addition, his 1000 split time of 8:57.86 broke Michal Szuba’s 9:02.89 from 2015. Craddock had a time of 15:03.76 to secure the ninth spot. Both were NCAA B cuts.

"Even though the final scores show we did not meet our team goal, we sure did go out and perform well with all we had," said head coach Ned Skinner. "The men stood by each other all weekend and we take away many positives. The Hokies had so many awesome performances led by Lane Stone, Norbert Szabo and Ian Ho. I am also proud of our divers for their strong work last week, led by Ben Schiesl and Thomas Shinholser."

Justin Edwards finished 13th in the 200 breaststroke with a B cut time of 1:57.20 while Sam Tornqvist was 14th in the 200 back with a B cut of 1:43.56. Tornqvist’s time moves him into fifth on the all-time Tech times list.

Norbert Szabo also took 13th, finishing in a B cut of 1:44.62 in the 200 fly. His teammate sophomore Hassler Carroll had a B time of 1:47.83 to finish in 21st for the Hokies.

In the 100 free, Ian Ho was 23rd with a time of 43.71 while Harrison Pierce finished just behind in a 24th place time of 44.40.

Final team scores: NC State – 1457; Louisville – 1170.5; Virginia – 983.5; Notre Dame – 941; Florida State – 828.5; Virginia Tech – 688.5; Duke – 621; North Carolina – 568; Georgia Tech – 504; Pitt – 324; Boston College – 137; Miami – 94.

The Hokies will return to the pool March 5-7 for the NCAA Diving Zone Championships. NCAA Swimming Championships will begin March 14-17 for the women and March 21-24 for the men.
