Gyorgy wins gold on day three of ACC Championships

Tech finishes in top-8 of six events on Friday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Reka Gyorgy defended her ACC title in the 400 IM on Friday evening at the 2018 ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

“Our ladies have really started to find their momentum,” said head coach Ned Skinner. “Tonight was a strong session. Reka was a jolt for us and so many of the women are performing at a high level.”

Gyorgy posted a time of 4:04.42 in the event, recording a A cut time and the sixth fastest time in the NCAA this season. She also broke her own Virginia Tech record of 4:04.97 in the event which she set last season at ACCs. In addition, Gyorgy finished almost two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Maggie Gruber opened the evening session with a sixth place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 52.64 for a B cut time. Klaudia Nazieblo took 14th in 53.13 while Leah Rogers was 20th in 54.11. Both are B standard times.

Joelle Vereb finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.49 for a B cut time. Kelly Henry scored in 20th in 1:01.95 (B cut) while MJ Ulrich was 22nd in 1:02.51.

Nazieblo was strong in her second event of the evening, finishing fifth in the 100 back with a B cut of 52.56. She led a trio of Hokies who scored in the event as Gruber placed 14th (53.53) and Chloe Hicks was 22nd (53.46).

“Klaudia and Maggie gave us five hard-fought 100s today,” said Skinner. “We are set-up for a big surge tomorrow.”

Grace Kowal also scored in the 400 IM, finishing in 20th with 4:14.87. Adriana Grabski was 17th in the 200 free with a time of 1:46.53 while teammate Eleanor Matheson was 21st in 1:47.70.

On the boards, Ashlynn Peters took fifth in the 3-meter with a score of 312.10. Both the men’s and women’s divers will be back in action tomorrow on the platform.

The Hokies wrapped up the evening with a sixth place finish in the 400 medley relay as Nazieblo, Vereb, Gruber and Grabski turned in a time of 3:34.49.

Tech will wrap up the ACC Championships on Saturday, Feb. 17 with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. followed by 6 p.m. finals.
