Hokie men and women place second at Princeton Invite
Both squads finish barely behind nationally-ranked opponents

PRINCETON, N.J. – Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams raced their way to second-place finishes at the Princeton Invite on Saturday morning, just narrowly finishing behind two nationally-ranked Villanova squads. Stuart Robertson paced the men’s team with a second-place finish individually while Sarah Rapp was the top individual finisher in the women’s race.

For the men, Robertson finished just one second behind Penn’s Thomas Awad, earning the second-place finish with a personal-best time of 24:01 in the men’s 8K race. The next finisher for Tech was Darren Barlow, whose personal best of 24:19 was good enough for a sixth-place finish overall.

Patrick Joseph posted a 14th-place finish with a time of 24:32, while teammate Andrew Gaiser finished with a time of 2:43, good for a 23rd-place finish overall. Daniel Jaskowak (24:45) and Neil Gourley (24:46) were next to cross the line for the Hokies finishing in 26th and 27th places, respectively. Jaskowak was the last scorer for the men, giving them 71 points overall for a second-place finish behind No. 8 Villanova.

The Hokie women came in second place behind No. 21 Villanova thanks to Sarah Rapp, who finished first overall in the women’s 6K race with a time of 21:11. Paige Kvartunas was just behind her with a time of 21:23, good for a fourth-place finish.

Hillary Krein (22:09), Shannon Morton (22:11) and Abigail Motley (22:12) finished in 17th, 19th and 22nd places, respectively, to close out the Hokie scoring. The Tech women finished with 63 points, just five points behind Villanova.

The Hokies will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 31 when Tech travels to Charlottesville, Va. for the 2014 ACC Cross Country Championships hosted by the University of Virginia.
