Tech kicks off Hokie Invitational in good form

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s track & field teams used several quality performances to kick off day one of the Hokie Invitational at Rector Field House on Friday evening.

For the women, Hanna Green, competing unattached, set a new school record in the women’s 600-meter race. Green’s time of 1:30.97 surpassed former Hokie Frances Dowd for the top mark in the record book. Amanda Smith finished just behind her 1:31.34 for a second-place finish. Katarina Smiljanec posted a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:34.88.

Paige Kvartunas won the women’s one-mile race with a time of 4:45.86. That time moves Kvartunas into fourth all-time in the Virginia Tech record book.

Sarah Rapp finished in fourth place of the women’s 1000 with a time of 2:52.24.

Nora McKiver posted a new PR in the women’s 60-meter hurdles. McKiver finished in third place with a time of 8.57 seconds moving her into seventh all-time in the Virginia Tech record books.

Erinn Schaal won the women’s unseeded pole vault, hitting a mark of 11’10.75” (3.63m).

On the men's side, Juan Campos and Neil Gourley posted a one-two finish in the men's 3000 with Campos winning the race in a time of 8:15.34 and Gourley coming in second with a time of 8:16.30.

Prince Owusu won the men’s 600-meter race. Owusu crossed the finish line with a time of 1:20.6 while teammates Martin Dally (1:21.38) and Kevin DeWillie (1:21.66) finished in sixth and eighth places, respectively.

Tomas Kruzliak finished in second place in the men’s weight throw hitting a personal best of 70’3.5” (21.42m). That throw ties Kruzliak for first in the ACC and fifth in the nation based on results compiled before this weekend.

In the men’s 1000-meter race, Tech placed five runners in the top 10. Vince Ciattei finished in second place with a time of 2:25.87. Behind him in fourth and fifth places, respectively, were Thomas Curtin (2:26.03) and Patrick Joseph (2:26.18). Grant Pollock finished in seventh with a time of 2:27.56 while Griffin Carmichael finished in eighth with a time of 2:27.78.

Aaron Simpson finished in seventh place in the men’s 60-meter hurdles. Simpson ran his race in a time of 8.37 seconds.

Dante Price and Darius Watkins finished in fifth and sixth places, respectively, in the men’s 60-meter dash. Price crossed the finish line at 6.93 seconds while Watkins finished in a time of 6.94 seconds.

In the men’s one-mile race, Darren Barlow finished in fifth with a time of 4:07.88 while Daniel Jaskowak finished with a time of 4:09.18 for a sixth-place finish.

Tech will be back in action tomorrow. The first event starts at 11 a.m. Live results will be available.
