Hokies with five wins on day one of Technotational

Competition resumes Saturday at 10 a.m.

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s swim teams turned in five wins during the finals on the first day of competition at the 2018 Technotational at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Tech took the top spot in the men’s 200 free relay as Collin Fiala, Chris Outlaw, Gershwin Greene and Alexander McMurry had a time of 1:22.13.

Nathan Pawlowicz claimed fourth place for the Hokies in the men’s 500 freestyle with a time of 4:40.01. The Hokies followed up with a three, four finish in the 200 IM with Connor Doyle’s 1:50.65 and Cooper Pitts’ 1:52.01.

The Hokies swept the top-three of the men’s 50 free behind Outlaw’s 20.66. He was followed by Fiala in 20.91 and Greene in 20.97.

The Hokies opened the finals with a one, two finish in the women’s 200 free relay. Joelle Vereb, Adriana Grabski, Maggie Gruber and Danielle Griggs teamed up for a time of 1:30.69. Tech’s team of Sydney Pesetti, Kayla Purcell, Abigail Andrusin and Molly Sheffield recorded a time of 1:34.28.

Tech claimed fourth and fifth in the women’s 200 IM as Jessica Beattie had a time of 2:04.68 and Molly Sheffield swam a 2:05.94.

Purcell took the top finish in the women’s 50 free, finishing with a time of 23.25 while Andrusin finished just behind with a time of 23.41.

The Hokies wrapped up the first day with a win in the women’s 400-medley relay as Heather Sigmon, Caroline de Jager, Purcell and Andrusin turned in a time of 3:44.10.

Tech will be back in the pool tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. for the prelims of the 400IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
