BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech runners Shannon Morton and Peter Seufer recorded the best times of the day, as the Virginia Tech cross country teams served as the hosts for the Virginia Tech Alumni Invite held Friday evening at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course on the Hokies’ campus.

Morton, a fifth-year senior from Chesapeake, Virginia, ran the 6k version of the course in a time of 21 minutes, 31.60 seconds, beating teammate Katie Kennedy (21:35.30) by nearly four seconds and finishing ahead of 92 other runners. It marked the first cross country win of Morton’s career.

Lauren Berman came in fourth with a time of 21:44.80, giving the Hokies three of the top four finishers in the race. The Hokies’ Kathryn Little, Abigail Motley, Sara Freix, Ella Breidenstine and Sarah Edwards recorded the next five fastest times. All five ran unattached.

Officially, the Hokies’ Jennifer Fleming finished sixth with a time of 22:09.30, while Hanna Green and Kayla Richardson came in seventh and eighth, respectively. Green ran the course in a time of 22:14.10, while Richardson, coming off her win two weeks ago in the Hokie Invite, ran the course in a time of 22:19.60.

The Tech women won the team race with 20 points. Ohio came in second, followed by Liberty, Akron and East Tennessee State.

In the 112-runner men’s race, Seufer ran unattached and finished the 8k course in a time of 24:51.80, besting teammate Andrew Gaiser by two tenths of a second. Gaiser officially won the race, followed by teammate Ashkan Mohammadi (24:52.90) and Daniel Jaskowak (24:53.10).

Tech’s Neil Gourley and Patrick Joseph, both running unattached, recorded the sixth and eighth fastest times. Gourley ran the course in a time of 24:58.60, while Joseph ran it in 25:06.50.

The Hokies won the team competition on the men’s side, finishing with 21 points. Liberty came in second, followed by Ohio, East Tennessee State and Akron.

Both Tech squads now take two weeks off before heading to Louisville for the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 1.
