BLACKSBURG – A Nick Anderson grand slam in the first inning was all the run support Packy Naughton and the pitching staff needed for Virginia Tech, as the Hokies defeated No. 5 Miami on Friday night at English Field, 14-3, in the ACC season opener for both schools.

Anderson’s blast, the only extra base hit for the Hokies of their 15 in the game, accounted for four of Tech’s five first-inning runs, while Tom Stoffel added a pair of two-RBI singles in the game as both knocked in a total of five runs in the contest to lead the Hokies’ offensively.

Naughton improved to 2-1 on the mound after tossing 6.2 innings and striking out six batters. Cole Kragel went 1.1 innings scoreless and Joey Sullivan pitched the ninth. Miami’s Thomas Woodrey (2-2) took the loss for the Hurricanes.

How the runs were scored

• Tech (10-5, 1-0 ACC) quickly loaded the bases in the first and Phil Sciretta knocked in the first run before Anderson hit the grand slam over the left center field wall.
• Miami (11-3, 0-1 ACC) answered with two in the top of the second, with Brandon Lopez hitting an RBI double and later scoring on an Edgar Michelangeli grounder.
• The Hokies offense continued its offensive outburst, with Anderson plating Saige Jenco with a single in the second and Jenco, Stoffel and Sciretta picking up RBI singles in the third to make it 9-2.
• Zack Collins hit a solo home run in the fifth to provide the final run for Miami.
• Tech responded with three in the home half, with Stoffel knocking home two and Andrew Mogg drawing a bases-loaded walk to plate the other. Stoffel finished the Hokies’ scoring in the eighth with another two-RBI single.

• Jenco: career-high 4 runs scored, 22nd career multi-run scoring game; 3 hits, 18th career three-hit game.
• Grant Maiorana: 2 runs scored, fourth multi-run scoring game; 2 hits, third multi-hit game.
• Stoffel: career-high 4 hits, sixth multi-hit game; career-high 5 RBIs, sixth multi-RBI game.
• Sciretta: 2 hits, ninth multi-hit game; 2 RBIs, third multi-RBI game.
• Anderson: first collegiate home run; 2 hits, third multi-hit game; career-high 5 RBIs, second multi-RBI game.
• Ryan Tufts, 2 runs, third multi-run scoring game.
• Naughton: season-high 6.2 innings pitched

Additional Notes

• Tech is now 5-7 in ACC openers, winning the last two, and is 3-9 in ACC home openers, but have won the last three.
• The Hokies have also now won eight straight games in their ACC home-opening weekend, sweeping their last two opponents (Virginia, 2015, and Pittsburgh, 2014; and winning the final game against Georgia Tech in 2013).
• Anderson’s grand slam marked the second straight ACC series the Hokies have hit one, as Mogg hit a grand slam in the final ACC series of 2015 at Pittsburgh. It’s also the second grand slam hit this season (Sam Fragale, at The Citadel, Feb. 21).
• Tech has scored at least 11 runs in seven of its 10 wins.
• The 14 runs were the most ever scored against Miami, previous high was nine back in 2013 (an 11-9 loss on March 22) and the 11-run difference is the largest in a Tech win since 2013 as well (an 8-5 win in 10 innings at Miami, March 24).

The teams will continue the ACC series on Saturday at 1 p.m. Taking the mound for Tech will be Kit Scheetz (3-0, 0.96 ERA), while Miami counters with Michael Mediavilla (3-0, 1.06 ERA).
