NORFOLK, Va. – In the first game of the Old Dominion Baseball Tournament on Friday afternoon at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex, the Virginia Tech Hokies lost a 7-6 decision to Delaware as three errors contributed to the setback.

Cole Kragel (0-1) took the loss for the Hokies, while Packy Naughton started the game and went five innings. Ron Marinaccio improved to 2-0 with the win on the mound and Nick Spadafino earned the save.

How the runs were scored

• Delaware (3-1) used a leadoff double by Kevin Mohollen to plate the game’s first run in the first. He came home off the bat of Jordan Glover, who later scored an unearned run to but the Blue Hens up 2-0.
• In the top of the third, Glover doubled to start the frame and would cross the plate again to increase Delaware’s lead to 3-0.
• Tech (2-3) capitalized on a two-out Delaware error to score a pair of runs. Andrew Mogg singled (after a dropped foul ball), Matt Dauby doubled and Ryan Tufts drove them both in with his own double.
• The Hokies tied the game in the fifth when Sam Fragale hit a two-out double to score Phil Sciretta, who singled to reach base.
• Delaware reclaimed its lead when Nick Patten raced home from third on a wild pitch in the sixth and increased its lead to 7-3 with three more in the eighth – the key hit a two-RBI double by Adam Rapp.
• Tech wouldn’t go quietly, as they drew four straight walks to score one and Tom Stoffel doubled home two more to pull the Hokies to within one at 7-6 in the bottom of the frame.

Inside the Box

• Jenco extended his reached-base streak to 25 straight with a walk in the third. He also stole his first base of the year, and is 31-of-38 in his Tech career.
• Stoffel plated two runs, giving him four career multi-RBI games, his second of the year.
• Sciretta extended his hitting streak to all five games this season with a single in the fifth.
• Fragale extended his hitting streak to all five games this season with an RBI double in the fifth. He leads the Hokies with seven RBIs this year.
• Dauby had a two-hit game, his 10th career multi-hit game for Tech, and scored two runs, his seventh career multi-run scoring game.
• Tufts knocked in two runs, his sixth career multi-RBI game for the Hokies.
• Naughton tossed five frames and struck out a career-high nine batters, opposed to just one walk.
• Connor Coward (1.1/2K) and Aaron McGarity (1.0/K) did not allow an earned run in either of their times on the mound

Additional Notes

• Naughton went over 50 innings pitched (54.2) and 50 strikeouts (51) for his career at Tech and for the season has 16 strikeouts opposed to just one walk in 10.2 innings.
• This season, Tech is 0-3 overall in games decided by two runs or less – 0-2 in games decided by one run.

The Hokies will return to the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex on Saturday to face the hosts of the tournament Old Dominion in a contest that starts at 4 p.m. Kit Scheetz will get the ball for Tech, while the Monarchs are sending out Jake Josephs.
