NORFOLK, Va. – In the first game of the Old Dominion Baseball Tournament on Friday afternoon at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex, the Virginia Tech Hokies lost a 7-6 decision to Delaware as three errors contributed to the setback.
Cole Kragel (0-1) took the loss for the Hokies, while Packy Naughton started the game and went five innings. Ron Marinaccio improved to 2-0 with the win on the mound and Nick Spadafino earned the save.
How the runs were scored
- Delaware (3-1) used a leadoff double by Kevin Mohollen to plate the game’s first run in the first. He came home off the bat of Jordan Glover, who later scored an unearned run to but the Blue Hens up 2-0.
- In the top of the third, Glover doubled to start the frame and would cross the plate again to increase Delaware’s lead to 3-0.
- Tech (2-3) capitalized on a two-out Delaware error to score a pair of runs. Andrew Mogg singled (after a dropped foul ball), Matt Dauby doubled and Ryan Tufts drove them both in with his own double.
- The Hokies tied the game in the fifth when Sam Fragale hit a two-out double to score Phil Sciretta, who singled to reach base.
- Delaware reclaimed its lead when Nick Patten raced home from third on a wild pitch in the sixth and increased its lead to 7-3 with three more in the eighth – the key hit a two-RBI double by Adam Rapp.
- Tech wouldn’t go quietly, as they drew four straight walks to score one and Tom Stoffel doubled home two more to pull the Hokies to within one at 7-6 in the bottom of the frame.
