A look back on the summer of 2014
A total of 23 players saw action with nine winning titles

BLACKSBURG – With the school year off and running and the Virginia Tech baseball program getting set to start its fall baseball season, it’s a good time to take a look back on how the returning players, who played during the summer, fared in their respective leagues.

In all, of the 23 players that saw action this summer in 12 leagues scattered across the country, 17 Hokies advanced to the postseason with more than half of them (9) winning a team title to highlight their summers.

Below (in alphabetical order) is a recap of all returning Hokies who played baseball this summer with team/league in parenthesis. A special thank you goes out to those players who were able to supply pictures to use in summer ball recap Instagram images, which is available to view by clicking on that respective link.

Nick Anderson (Los Angeles/California) – One of two Hokies to both pitch and hit this summer … In 11 innings pitched, had a 3.09 ERA and struck out 15 batters … Earned one save in eight games … Also played in 29 games and batted .338 … Had 25 hits – including seven doubles, one triple and three home runs … Scored 23 runs and had 12 RBIs … Made the postseason and won a team title with the Brewers … Instagram.

Logan Bible (Youses/Cal Ripken) – Played in 33 games and batted .304 … Had 34 hits – including two doubles and a home run … Scored 12 runs and had 13 RBIs … Made the postseason with the Orioles.

Mac Caples (Baltimore/Cal Ripken) – Played in 38 games and batted .336 … Had 43 hits – including eight doubles and three home runs … Scored 33 runs and had 26 RBIs … Finished third in the league in runs and walks (27), fourth in batting and RBIs and seventh in hits … Made the postseason and won a team title with the Redbirds … Was named the league’s series Most Outstanding Player after batting .571 with eight RBIs in the playoffs … Instagram.

Miguel Ceballos (Winter Park/Florida) – Played in 35 games and batted .265 … Had 30 hits – including two doubles, one triple and one home run … Scored 26 runs, had 16 RBIs and stole 17 bases … Finished fourth in the league in runs and sixth in stolen bases … Made the postseason with the Squeeze … Instagram.

Luis Collazo (Bethesda/Cal Ripken) – In 18 innings pitched, had a 3.50 ERA and struck out 15 batters … Appeared in nine games and made one start … Made the postseason with the Big Train … Instagram.

Rahiem Cooper (Old Orchard/Futures) – Played in 46 games and batted .298 … Had 54 hits – including six doubles, five triples and four home runs … Scored 30 runs, had 22 RBIs and stole 24 bases … Finished second in the league in triples and third in stolen bases … Was earned the league’s Player of the Night honor and was named an All-Star … Instagram.

JD Doran (Humboldt/Independent) – In 26 innings pitched, had a 1.73 ERA and struck out 14 batters … Appeared in 15 games total … Instagram.

Sam Fragale (Lake Norman/Southern) – Played in 22 games and batted .207 … Had 12 hits – including three doubles and two home runs … Scored 14 runs and had 11 RBIs … Made the postseason and won a team title with the Copperheads.

Brendon Hayden (Wisconsin/Northwoods) – Played in 70 games and batted .317 … Had 89 hits – including 18 doubles, one triple and eight home runs … Scored 52 runs and had 48 RBIs … Finished first in the league in at-bats (281), second in hits, third in doubles, tied for fifth in runs, eighth in RBIs and tied for 10th in home runs … Made the postseason with the Woodchucks and was named an All-Star … Set Woodchuck single-season records for hits, at-bats and games, while setting career marks for RBIs (99), hits (163) and doubles (36) … Instagram.

Garrett Hudson (Baltimore/Cal Ripken) – Played in 39 games and batted .308 … Had 45 hits – including 10 doubles and one triple … Scored 26 runs and had 22 RBIs … Finished second in the league in hits, fourth in doubles, eighth in RBIs and 10th in batting … Made the postseason and won a team title with the Redbirds … Batted .303 with five runs and three RBIs in the playoffs … Was once named league Player of the Night … Instagram.

Sean Kennedy (Baltimore/Cal Ripken) – In 30.2 innings pitched, had a 3.81 ERA and struck out 24 batters … Posted a 1-1 mark in eight games, making six starts … Made the postseason and won a team title with the Redbirds and was also named an All-Star … Tossed eight innings in a playoff start, allowing no earned runs with three strikeouts in a no-decision effort … Instagram.

Andrew McDonald (Youses/Cal Ripken & Harwich/Cape Cod) – In 33 innings pitched, had a 2.72 ERA and struck out 33 batters for Youses … Appeared in seven games and made five starts … Appeared in two games for Harwich … Threw a total of three innings, struck out two batters and had a 3.00 ERA … Made the postseason with Harwich.

Aaron McGarity (Baltimore/Cal Ripken) – Named a Second Team Summer League All-American by Perfect Game … In 46 innings pitched, had a 1.76 ERA and struck out 52 batters … Posted a 4-1 mark in seven games, all starts … Made the postseason and won a team title with the Redbirds and was also named an All-Star … Went seven innings and struck out four in a playoff win … Finished second in the league in strikeouts, tied for fourth in starts, fifth in innings and sixth in ERA … Instagram.

Andrew Mogg (Winter Park/Florida) – Played in 17 games and batted .194 with seven hits – including three doubles … Scored six runs and had six RBIs.

Alex Perez (Harwich/Cape Cod) – Played in seven games and batted .211 with four hits – including one double … Scored four runs and had two RBIs.

Kit Scheetz (Bethesda/Cal Ripken) – In 38 innings pitched, had a 1.89 ERA and struck out 31 batters … Posted a 5-1 mark in seven games, all starts … Made the postseason with the Big Train … Finished tied for first in the league in wins, tied for fourth in starts and seventh in ERA … Was also once named league Pitcher of the Week … Instagram.

Luke Scherzer (Southampton/Hampton & Harrisonburg/Valley) – In 10.2 innings pitched, had a 7.59 ERA and struck out 14 batters for Southampton … Appeared in four games and had an 0-2 mark … Appeared in eight games for Harrisonburg and posted a 3-0 mark with one save … Threw a total of 20.2 innings, struck out 21 batters and had a 2.17 ERA … Instagram.

Phil Sciretta (Old Orchard/Futures) – Played in 12 games and batted .184 with seven hits – including a double … Scored eight runs and had four RBIs.

Stuart Springer (Victoria/Texas) – In 45.1 innings pitched, had a 3.97 ERA and struck out 28 batters … Posted a 3-1 mark in 15 games, with six starts … Made the postseason with the Generals … Finished tied for fourth in the league in wins, tied for fifth in starts and sixth in strikeouts and innings … Instagram.

Tom Stoffel (Brockton/Futures) – One of two Hokies to both pitch and hit this summer … In 11.1 innings pitched, struck out 18 batters … Posted a 0.79 ERA in seven appearances … Also played in 41 games and batted .292 … Had 40 hits – including six doubles, two triples and a home run … Scored 18 runs and had 24 RBIs … Made the postseason with the Rox … Twice, was named the league’s Player of the Night … Instagram.

Ricky Surum (Southampton/Hampton) – Played in 16 games and batted .411 … Had 23 hits – including three doubles and one triple … Scored eight runs and had 10 RBIs … Made the postseason and won a team title with the Breakers while also earning an All-Star nod … Instagram.

Ryan Tufts (Newport/New England) – Played in 34 games and batted .198 with 24 hits – including three doubles … Scored 13 runs and had six RBIs … Made the postseason and won a team title with the Gulls.

Jon Woodcock (Santa Barbara/California) – In 28.2 innings pitched, had a 1.57 ERA and struck out 42 batters … Posted a 4-1 mark in five games, all starts … Finished tied for third in the league in wins, tied for sixth in strikeouts and eighth in ERA … Was named an All-Star and a postseason All-League starting pitcher … The Foresters were the league’s regular season champs and won the NBC National Championship in a tournament held in Wichita, Kansas … Instagram.
