LAS VEGAS - Redshirt sophomore David McFadden took the 165-pound title with a first period pin in the finals at Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas on Saturday evening. McFadden was one of four Hokies to place at the prestigious tournament.
Redshirt senior Jared Haught placed second, redshirt junior Zack Zavatsky finished fourth and redshirt freshman Andrew Dunn placed seventh in his first Cliff Keen Invitational. In the team standings, the Hokies finished sixth overall with 89.5 team points.
In the finals, McFadden faced Wisconsin’s Evan Wick, ranked 17th in the nation at 165 and the No. 9 seed in the tournament. Off a scramble midway through the first period, McFadden was able to get Wick on his back and secure the pin with two seconds left in the first period. His victory marked the first win by fall in a Cliff Keen final since Ohio State’s Johnni DiJulius pinned Oklahoma’s Cody Brewer at 133 pounds. McFadden is also the third Cliff Keen champion in program history joining Ty Walz (2015) and Joey Dance (2016).
McFadden’s takedown and two near fall points in the first period was all he needed in his semifinals match vs. Ohio State’s Te’Shan Campbell as he took a 4-0 decision into the finals.
After falling in the semifinals to Michigan’s Domenic Abounader, Zavatsky bounced back with a 6-1 decision over Binghamton’s Steven Schneider in the consolation semis that earned him a spot in the third place match. Haught pinned Drexel’s Stephen Loiseau early in the second period that advanced him to the finals where he fell to eventual champion Kollin Moore of Ohio State
In his first consolation bout of the day, Dunn was put on his back late in the second period and trailed 11-2 to Eastern Michigan’s Gage Hutchison, the No. 8 seed. Dunn countered by driving through, putting Hutchison on back and securing the fall at 4:59. After dropping a 5-1 decision to eventual fifth-placer Shawn Streck of Purdue, Dunn handled Cornell’s Jeramy Sweany in the seventh place match to the tune of a 14-6 major decision.
The Hokies return to action next week when they travel to New York City to face Princeton in the annual Grapple at the Garden on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 4:30 p.m.
