Multiple Tech grapplers place at the Hokie Open

McFadden, Gustafson win titles in their respective weight classes on Sunday

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech wrestling program saw 15 wrestlers place, including five grapplers competing attached, at Sunday’s Hokie Open at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia.

Redshirt senior Dennis Gustafson and redshirt sophomore David McFadden took home titles in their respective weight classes while true freshmen CJ Manley (133), Mekhi Lewis (165), Stanley Smeltzer (184) and John Borst (197) won their weights in the freshman and sophomore bracket.

Those performances helped the Hokies win the freshman/sophomore team competition with 220 points. Tech finished sixth out of 21 teams competing in the open.

The Hokies return to action this Saturday at the Northeast Round Robin in Albany, New York on Sunday, Nov. 12.
