COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 15th-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling squad one four of six contested matches, but an injury default at heavyweight and two last-second losses spelled disaster as the Hokies fell to 10th-ranked Ohio State 21-12 Sunday in front of an announced crowd of 2,474 at St. John Arena. The Buckeyes improve to 4-0 with the win while the Hokies fall to 1-1.
The match started at 174 pounds with Ohio State’s fourth-ranked Nick Heflin using a pair of takedowns en route to a 6-2 decision of Chris Moon. At 184 pounds, OSU’s C.J. Magrum got a pair of takedowns in both the first and second periods on Tech’s John Dickson, but Dickson battled back with two takedowns of his own. But Magrum got a late takedown and a bonus point for riding time to seal the 12-6 win.
At 197 pounds, Nick Vetterlein picked up a huge win for the Hokies, getting a takedown just before the final buzzer to upset No. 14 Andrew Campolattano, 4-3. Campolattano, a highly touted freshman, got a takedown in the first period but Vetterlein escaped at the buzzer to make it 2-1. The two traded escapes to start the second and third periods, respectively, but Vetterlein kept pressing and finally got the takedown with two seconds left to pull off the big win.
The air was taken out of the building at the heavyweight match when Tech’s 17th-ranked David Marone hurt his knee and was unable to continue. He was trailing 4-0 after giving up a takedown and back points, but was close to an escape when OSU’s Pete Capone twisted him and Marone hurt his knee. After trying to go, he had to take an injury default to make it 12-3 in favor of the Buckeyes in a match that Tech was heavily favored in.
Moving to 125 pounds, Tech’s Ty Mitch and OSU’s Johnni Dijulius traded escapes early on, but Dijulius held a 5-4 lead late. Dijulius was dinged for his second stall warning late in the third period to tie it up and send it to sudden victory. There, Mitch, secured the takedown with 5 seconds left to pick up the exciting win.
At 133 pounds, fourth-ranked Logan Steiber of Ohio State used a pair of takedowns in the first period and played defense the rest of the match to down Tech’s fifth-ranked Devin Carter 6-1. Zach Neibert made his season debut at 141 pounds and looked good early on, picking up a pair of takedowns against No. 15 Hunter Steiber. But Steiber picked up a pair of takedowns in the last minute with the last coming with under 10 seconds left as the Buckeyes pulled out a last-second win of their own. The Buckeyes picked up a second-straight last-second victory when 16th-ranked Cam Tessari took down Nick Brascetta with four seconds left to take a 5-4 lead. Brascetta was hurt on the sequence and had to take riding time. Under the new NCAA rule, after an injury timeout, the opposition gets to choose position and Tessari chose down and escaped at the end. Brascetta had to be carried off the mat as Tessari came away with the 6-4 win.
At 157 pounds, it was a battle of the Westerville North High School products in fifth-ranked Jesse Dong and 13th-ranked Josh Demas. Demas got a quick takedown and led 2-1 after a period, but Dong got a takedown in the second period to take a 4-2 lead. Dong rode him for over a minute to end the period and Demas chose neutral in the final period. The two engaged in a mad scramble with under 30 seconds left, but Dong popped out on top to get a takedown at the buzzer and win 7-2 with riding time.
In the final match, Tech’s 14th-ranked Pete Yates got taken down early by Derek Garcia, but reversed him and picked up a four-point nearfall to take a 6-2 lead. Yates picked up a pair of escapes to widen his lead to 8-2 before cutting him to make it 8-3, but not before picking up 1:13 of riding time to pick up the 9-3 win.
The team will be back in action Sunday, taking on the University of Virginia in both team’s ACC opener. The action will begin at 1 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.
