Ciattei earns ACC Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Ciattei headlines 16 Hokies named to All-ACC Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech track and field’s distance runner Vincent Ciattei has been recognized as the 2018 ACC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon.

Ciattei is the fourth Hokie to earn the prestigious award, joining Alexander Ziegler (2013), Torben Laidig (2017) and Hanna Green (2017).

Sixteen Hokies were named to the All-ACC Academic Team, with eight on both sides.

Ciattei took home the silver medal in the men’s mile with a school-record and personal-best time of 3:58.36, and then won gold as a part of the distance medley relay team that finished with a time of 9:30.76 at the NCAA Track and Field Indoor Championships. It marked Tech’s first-ever national title in a distance event.

The Maryland native also won the mile at the ACC Indoor Championships with a time of 4:03.08 and ran a personal-best time of 8:10.91 in the 3,000 meters.

An engineering sciences and mechanics major, Ciattei is an eight-time honoree on the Virginia Tech Dean’s List. He has been named to the AD Honor Roll for five straight years and the ACC Academic Honor Roll for four years.

Ciattei was one of 52 individuals recently honored as a recipient of the 2018 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship, which is awarded annually to graduating ACC student-athletes who have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes each conference student-athlete with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.

The Hokies are in action this weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays and Beach Invitational in California, the Duke Invitational in North Carolina and War Eagle Classic in Alabama.
