Green, Smith set school records to kick off VT Challenge
Tech athletes compete well to open meet

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Amanda Smith broke a school record in the 1000 while Hanna Green claimed the school record in the 600 to pace the Hokies on the first day of the Virginia Tech Challenge at Rector Field House on Friday evening.

Smith shattered the previous school record by almost by three seconds. Her time of 2:44.54 beat out former Hokie great Tasmin Fanning’s time of 2:47.07. Green beat her school record that she previously set this season with a time of 1:28.78. Green bested her own time by more than two seconds. Both Smith and Green finished in first place in their respective races.

Nora McKiver finished in first place in the women’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.51 seconds. Christine London posted a seventh-place finish with a time of 9.09 seconds.

Courtney Blanden finished in fourth place in the women’s 60-meter dash with a time of 7.73 seconds.

Competing unattached in the women’s 800, Tessa Riley finished in second place with a time of 2:10.76. Marie Johnston, also unattached, posted a fourth-place finish with a time of 2:13.02.

McKiver won her second race of the night, the women’s 200, with a time of 24.61 seconds. Blanden finished in fourth place overall with a time of 25.13 seconds.

In the men’s 600, Griffin Carmichael posted a third-place finish with a time of 1:20.68. Bret Freed finished in sixth-place overall with a time of 1:22.83.

Aaron Simpson posted a sixth-place finish in the men’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.36 seconds.

Darren Barlow was the highest collegiate finisher in the men’s one-mile race. Barlow crossed the finish line with a time of 4:05.49. Stuart Robertson posted an eighth-place finish with a time of 4:08.91 while Daniel Jaskowak finished just behind him in ninth place with a time of 4:09.06.

Dante Price and Demitri Knowles finished in fourth and fifth places, respectively, in the men’s 60-meter dash. Price ran the race in a time of 6.97 seconds while Knowles finished with a time of 6.99 seconds.

In the men’s weight throw, Tomas Kruzliak finished in second place with a heave of 64’11.5” (19.80m).

Price and Knowles posted a two-three finish in the men’s 200-meter race. Price finished with a time of 21.75 seconds while Knowles posted a time of 22.24 seconds.

Jeffrey Linta finished in second place in the men’s unseeded pole vault, hitting a mark of 15’11” (4.85m).

The Hokies will conclude the Virginia Tech Challenge tomorrow. In addition, several of Tech’s top distance runners will be competing in North Carolina at the UCS Invitational at the JDL Fast Track.
