Distance runners set to compete at Hilton Garden Innvitational
Tech looks to perform well at meet

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s track & field teams will be back in action this weekend at the Hilton Garden Innvitational as several distance runners will be looking to ascend in the national ranks in their respective events.

Only the distance runners will be competing this weekend. A few Hokies will be competing on Friday evening, with most of Tech’s runners competing on Saturday in the invitational sections of their respective events.

The women’s 800-meter race will feature two of the Hokies’ best performers ever at that distance. Both Hanna Green and Amanda Smith will be competing for Tech at the race. Green and Smith are both All-Americans in the event with Green earning the honors during the outdoor season and Smith earning them last year indoors. In addition, Smith won the ACC Championship in this event both indoors and outdoors last year.

Thomas Curtin, the current school record holder in the 5000-meter race, will be competing in the men’s 3000-meter race along with Stuart Robertson and Darren Barlow.

Patrick Joseph, the 2014 USATF Junior National Champion in the mile will be competing in the men’s one-mile race with Neil Gourley and Juan Campos.

Prince Owusu will be competing in the men’s 800-meter race on Saturday.

Sarah Rapp, the 2014 outdoor 5000-meter champion, will be competing in the women’s 5000-meter race along with teammate Paige Kvartunas.

Shannon Morton, the current school record holder in the outdoor 1500, will be competing in the women’s one-mile race.

Tech runners will participate in three races (men’s 3K, women’s 800, men’s 800) on Friday and the Hokie runners competing in the invitational sections of their respective races will race on Saturday.
