Tech hits NCAA B times on day two of ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s swimming team hit NCAA B marks in three swim events on Thursday during the second day of competition at the ACC Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Tech started the final round with Eleanor Matheson and Grace Kowal in the 500 free. Matheson finished 14th overall, hitting a B time of 4:46.39. Kowal claimed 18th with a B time of 4:46.87.

In the 200 IM, Reka Gyorgy took 12th overall and notched B time of 1:58.66.

Danielle Griggs claimed 15th overall in the 50 free and hit a B mark of 22.75 while Joelle Vereb was 23rd overall, hitting a B time of 22.72.

In the final event, the Hokies claimed sixth in the 200 free relay off swims from Griggs, Adriana Grabski, Maggie Gruber and Vereb. The team finished with a B qualifying time of 1:29.83.

On the boards, the men competed in the 1-meter with Ben Schiesl finishing seventh, scoring 309.50. Thomas Shinholser was ninth with a score of 325.80 while Mauro Castro-Silva finished 17th (284.20).

Women’s team standings: Virgina – 442.5; Louisville - 414.5; NC State - 373.0; North Carolina – 331.0; Notre Dame – 283.0; Duke – 274.5; Virginia Tech – 235.0; Pitt – 191.0; Florida State – 186.5; Miami – 143.0; Georgia Tech – 134.0; Boston College – 60.0.

The Hokies will return to the pool on Friday for prelims beginning at 10 a.m. including the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.
