NFL rookie mini-camps open, Hokies ready for next step

Hokie Club members, season ticket holders have until Tuesday to reserve WVU tickets

BLACKSBURG – Friday signaled the start of rookie mini-camps for a pair of Hokies selected in the 2017 NFL Draft. Both the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings are slated to take the field, meaning tight end Bucky Hodges and free safety Chuck Clark will both don NFL practice uniforms for the first time. Hodges will wear the No. 84 formerly worn by receiver Randy Moss for the Vikings, while Clark has been assigned No. 36 for the Ravens. In addition to Hodges and Clark, running back Sam Rogers also received his jersey assignment from the L.A. Rams. Rogers will wear No. 39. As of Friday morning, the Miami Dolphins had yet to assign numbers to their rookie class that includes receiver Isaiah Ford.

While only the Arizona Cardinals have officially announced their rookie free agent class that includes offensive tackle Jon McLaughin, here’s a look at Hokies who are anticipated to participate in upcoming NFL rookie mini-camps based on published reports, including quarterback Jerod Evans, who is expected to be part of Philadelphia’s undrafted free agent class.

Beamer, Fuente and Curry represent Hokies in Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl Charity Golf Event

Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente and former basketball great Dell Curry earned $27,500 in scholarship and charity from the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge charity golf tournament this week. College Football Selection Committee members Frank Beamer and Bobby Johnson finished at 1-under-par and took home $20,000 for charity.

Ferguson earns prestigious distinction

The Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association will recognize Virginia Tech’s Jarrett Ferguson as a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach at the organization’s annual awards event on May 11 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Ferguson will be one of 18 other coaches in the nation to be bestowed this recognition.
