NFL Combine underway, Big Squat Thursday & spring schedule

BLACKSBURG – The NFL Scouting Combine is underway in Indianapolis. Sam Rogers was the first of six Virginia Tech representatives to hit the bench press on Thursday, knocking out 19 reps at 225 pounds. Rogers ran an unofficial time of 4.93 seconds in the 40-yard dash with shuttle runs, the three-cone drill, the broad jump and vertical jump left to complete.

In addition to Rogers, safety Chuck Clark, defensive end Ken Ekanem, tight end Bucky Hodges, quarterback Jerod Evans and receiver Isaiah Ford also are showcasing their skills for coaches and scouts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends will conduct on-field drills Saturday, with defensive linemen and linebackers going through their paces Sunday. The Combine will conclude with defensive backs on the field Monday. We’ll have all the results as they come in on the @VT_Football Twitter feed.

Virginia Tech’s Pro Day is set for March 15. We’ll have full coverage of all the participants and NFL attendees.

Early mornings, Big Squat Thursday

Virginia Tech football coach Justin Fuente always keeps the Hokies guessing and this week, there were a couple changes to the regular off-season workout routine. Tech moved its 5:30 a.m. “Colorado” workouts outdoors on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, providing an added mental challenge for the squad, especially with temperatures hovering below freezing Friday morning.

With Tech’s spring break commencing this weekend, Fuente and his head strength and conditioning guru, Ben Hilgart, moved the traditional #BigSquatFriday up a day and conducted the first #BigSquatThursday. While many players logged personal bests, Tim Settle and Wyatt Teller doing reps at 605 pounds served as a great conclusion to the week’s lifting.
