BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech starting pitcher Packy Naughton notched his third quality start of the year, Jon Woodcock then tossed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, but the Hokies offense managed just one run on a Nick Anderson single in the ninth and Duke secured the ACC series at English Field at Union Park with a 3-1 victory on Sunday.
Naughton struck out six batters over six frames, but also walked six batters in giving up three earned runs. He got great help from his defense as Tech turned two double plays and Matt Dauby prevented a one-run Duke second from becoming a lot worse.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Blue Devil Chris Proctor lined a ball toward right center, but Dauby leaped and snared the ball to prevent any more damage.
Woodcock took over for Naughton in the seventh and allowed just two walks, while striking out two.
Tech came just a couple feet short of tying the game in the ninth, or at least getting the tying run on base, when Sam Fragale hit a deep fly ball into the left-center gap. With a runner on board, down 3-1, the ball came up short of a game-tying two-run home run and was actually caught by Duke’s Michael Smiciklas as he crashed into the wall. A double play a batter later ended the game.
Duke’s Brian McAfee (6-3) tossed eight innings and struck out five to get the win, with Mitch Stallings earning his sixth save of the year and Naughton (2-6) taking the loss.
How the runs were scored
- Duke (23-18, 9-12 ACC) used a two-out bases loaded walk in the second inning to plate its first run. The walk, drawn by Jimmy Herron, scored Peter Zyla.
- The Blue Devils added two in the sixth to make it 3-0. Herron again came through with the bases loaded, hitting a sacrifice fly to scored Zack Kone for run No. 2 and Smiciklas raced home on a passed ball.
- Tech (13-28, 4-17 ACC) used the game’s only extra base hit – a Phil Sciretta leadoff double in the ninth – to score its only run. Anderson followed with a single up the middle, his second hit of the game, to drive in Sciretta and cut the deficit to 3-1.
