BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech pitcher Kit Scheetz hurled the first complete game of his Tech career and struck out a season-high eight batters as the Hokies won the first game of an ACC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at English Field at Union Park over Duke, 3-2, in walk-off fashion.
However, both teams registered 19 hits in the second game of the day and the Blue Devils were able to avoid the sweep and won the second game, 19-9.
With a 2-0 lead in the ninth of the first game, Scheetz made his only mistake of the afternoon on a 2-2 pitch to Justin Bellinger, who tied the game with a two-run home run. Scheetz finished off the ninth and Tech won the game in the home half when Andrew Mogg doubled home Sam Fragale with the game winner.
Scheetz improved to 4-4 with the Game 1 win, while Jack Labosky took the loss (0-4). In the second game, Bailey Clark tossed the final five innings out of the bullpen for Duke to also improve his record to 4-4, while the Hokies used six pitchers in the contest with Nic Enright suffering the loss (0-2).
How the runs were scored
- Tech (13-27, 4-16 ACC) was held in check until the bottom of the seventh when the team put runners on the corners with one out – Nick Anderson double, Fragale sacrifice bunt, Ryan Tufts hit-by-pitch. Pinch hitter Garrett Hudson plated Anderson with a sacrifice fly to center that was followed by a Matt Dauby hit-by-pitch and a Rahiem Cooper RBI single.
- Duke (22-18, 8-12 ACC) was held scoreless through eight frames, scattering four hits, but earned its only free pass of Game 1 – a hit-by-pitch – that set up Bellinger’s tie-game blast.
- The Hokies quickly ended the game with Fragale drawing a leadoff walk and moving to second on a Tufts sacrifice bunt. Mogg then connected on the first pitch to give Tech the 3-2 win.
- In Game 2, Tech trailed 4-0 after the top half of the first, but tied the game as both Phil Sciretta and Fragale hit two-run home runs in the bottom of the frame.
- Duke, who scored in each of the first seven innings, made it 12-4 after its at-bats in the third and 19-6 after the Blue Devils batted in the seventh.
- Cooper had an RBI single in the third, Fragale hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Tufts hit an RBI single in the seventh.
- Mac Caples also hit a two-run home run, in the ninth that provided the game’s final runs.
