BLACKSBURG – Holding a lead for most of the game, the Virginia Tech baseball team surrendered two eighth-inning runs that turned a one-run lead into a one-run deficit and then the Pittsburgh Panthers held on for a 6-5 victory over the Hokies in ACC action Friday night at English Field at Union Park.
Sam Fragale hit a solo home run in the second to make it a 2-0 Tech lead and then drove in a pair in a three-run third – which answered a Pitt three-run top half – and put the Hokies a 5-3.
Pitt, though, got a complete game effort from T.J. Zeuch, who allowed just two earned runs and no runs after the third, and struck out seven to improve to 4-0 on the season. Cole Kragel suffered the loss and is now 2-2.
How the runs were scored
- Tech (12-24, 3-14 ACC) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after two frames. Saige Jenco scored the first run on a wild pitch after doubling to lead off the first and Sam Fragale led off the second with a solo home run.
- Pitt (16-14, 7-9 ACC) briefly took a one-run lead in the third with Ron Sherman doubling home Alex Kowalczyk for the first run then scoring himself to tie the game thanks to single by Caleb Parry. The Panthers took a 3-2 lead with Parry crossing the plate on a single by David Yanni.
- The Hokies answered back in the home half of the third when they capitalized on a two-out error by Pitt. With Jenco on second and Tom Stoffel on first, Sherman threw wide to first on a grounder to third, allowing Jenco to score and Stoffel (3rd) and Nick Anderson (2nd) to move into scoring position. Fragale followed with a single plating both and Tech took a 5-3 lead.
- A single run in the sixth and two in the eighth gave Pitt the lead back. Charles Leblanc scored the tying run on a wild pitch and Frank Maldonado singled home Kowalczyk with the go-ahead run, which stood as the game winner.

- Jenco: double in first at-bat, the seventh straight game he has reached base to leadoff the Hokies in the first; it was his sixth double of the season, 24th of his career; 3 hits, 12th multi-hit game of the season, 48th of his career; sixth time with at least three hits this season, 21st of his career; 2 runs, eighth multi-run scoring game of the season, 26th of his career.
- Phil Sciretta: single in the fifth, the 100th hit of his Tech career.
- Fragale: home run in second, extending his reached base streak to a career-long 15 straight games; his third long ball of the season, fourth of his career; 2 hits, seventh multi-hit game of the season, 11th of his career; 3 RBIs, fifth multi-RBI game of the season, seventh of his career; third game with at least three RBIs this season, fourth of his career.
- Rahiem Cooper: double, first of the season, fourth of his career; 2 hits, second multi-hit game of the season, ninth of his career.
- Enright: 4.0 IP, second longest outing in relief this season; 5 strikeouts, ties season high now done three times, last vs. Radford, April 13.
