CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In the same pitching matchup as last year’s series opener, which was won by the Hokies, No. 11 North Carolina’s Zac Gallen was able to outduel Virginia Tech’s Kit Scheetz this time and led the Tar Heels to a 6-0 victory to begin the ACC series between the two schools on Friday night at Boshamer Stadium.

Scheetz was just as effective in this start as he was in his regular-season start a year ago when he picked up the win in an 8-3 contest. In that one, he went seven innings, allowed eight hits and three runs, while striking out five. Tonight, he again went seven innings, allowed seven hits and four runs, while striking out five.

The Hokies however were able to get to Gallen in the 2015 contest, scoring five runs in five frames off of him. Tonight, he tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out 13 to improve to 4-2. Scheetz fell to 3-4 with the loss.

How the runs were scored

• North Carolina (22-8, 7-6 ACC) scored single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings and slowly built a 3-0 lead, before putting the game away with a three-spot in the eighth.
• Adam Pate led off the third with a double and scored on Brian Miller’s RBI single.
• Kyle Datres made it 2-0 with a two-out solo home run an inning later.
• Datres added an RBI single to his totals in the sixth, which plated Tyler Ramirez.
• In the eighth, the key hit was a two-out, two-RBI single by Zack Gahagan.
• Tech (10-21, 1-12 ACC) was shut out for just the second time this season.

Inside the Box

• Saige Jenco: walk, his team-leading 24th of the season.
• Phil Sciretta: single, his team-leading 41st hit of the year.
• Sam Fragale: double, his team-leading eighth of the season, 10th of his career.
• Joe Freiday, Jr.: 2 hits, third multi-hit game of the season, fifth of his career.
• Scheetz: start on mound, 25th in a Hokie uniform; 7.0 innings pitched, a season-high and seventh time this season with at least 6.0 IP, 15th time in his career; five strikeouts, fifth time this season with at least five, 10th time in his career.
