LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Matt Dauby hit a solo home run and Phil Sciretta added a three-run shot in a four-run third inning for the Virginia Tech baseball team, however the No. 4 Louisville Cardinals responded with seven unanswered runs and took the first of a three-game ACC series at Jim Patterson Stadium Saturday afternoon, 8-4.

Trailing 1-0, Dauby’s leadoff shot tied the game and Sciretta made it 4-1 with his home run. With Saige Jenco and Ryan Tufts aboard, Sciretta launched a ball into centerfield, which hit off the top of the wall and bounced back into the field. Before anyone could get to it, all three had scored.

Louisville’s Brendan McKay, who allowed a career-high four earned runs, picked up the win on the mound improving to 6-1. Kit Scheetz took the loss and is now 3-3 on the year.

How the runs were scored

• Louisville (21-5, 7-3 ACC) took a 1-0 lead on Danny Rosenbaum’s solo home run in the second.
• Tech (10-17, 1-9 ACC) scored its only runs of the game in the third. Dauby’s home run led off the third, followed by Sciretta’s two-out, inside-the-park home run that gave the Hokies a 4-1 advantage.
• The Cardinals scored runs in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh to reclaimed their lead and provide several insurance runs. Corey Ray hit a two-run home run in the fourth, Blake Tiberi had a two-RBI double in the fifth and Colin Lyman’s two-RBI single completed their scoring.

• Sciretta: home run, second of the season and his career; 2 hits, 12th multi-hit game of the season, 30th of his career; 3 RBIs, fifth multi-RBI game of the season, 10th of his career; now has 38 hits this year, a new season-high.
• Dauby: home run, team-leading third of the season, fourth of his career; 2 hits, eighth multi-hit game of the season, 16th of his career.
• Scheetz: 6.1 innings, sixth outing of the season with at least 6.0 IP; 5 strikeouts, fourth game of season with at least five, eighth of his career; notched the 100th career strikeout of his Tech career.
• Chris Monaco: retired only batter he faced, is now 3 of 5 in retiring first batter out of the pen; also inherited two runners and left them stranded.

Additional Notes

• Sciretta’s inside-the-park home run was the first by a Hokie since April 14, 2014, when Jenco led off the game with an inside-the-parker.
• Today’s game marked the first versus Louisville since April 30, 1995 and the first in the state of Kentucky since March 23, 3003.
• The Hokies turned their 16th double play of the year, the second behind Cole Kragel.
