ATLANTA – The Virginia Tech baseball team committed three errors in the contest against No. 22 Georgia Tech and the Yellow Jackets managed to score four unearned runs as a result and took the second game of the ACC baseball series at Russ Chandler Stadium Saturday night by an 8-3 count.
Mac Caples, in his first start of the season, hit a two-run home run and Saige Jenco had two hits and drove in one run to lead the Hokies offense.
GT relief pitcher Keyton Gibson, who came in from the bullpen in the second innings, picked up his second win of the year, while Burton Dulaney tossed the final four innings for his first save. Kit Scheetz suffered his first loss of the year and is now 3-1.
How the runs were scored
- Virginia Tech (10-10, 1-4 ACC) took a three-run lead in the top of the second inning. Mac Caples hit a two-run home run that scored Nick Anderson, who singled to lead off the frame, and Saige Jenco singled home Ryan Tufts to make it 3-0.
- Georgia Tech (14-4, 2-3 ACC) responded with four runs in the home half of the second, using RBI singles by Trevor Craport and Arden Pabst and the first Hokie error to plate two more and take the lead at 4-3.
- The Yellow Jackets added two unearned runs in the third, a single run in the fifth and another run in the eighth to pad their lead to 8-3.
Inside the Box
- Jenco: 2 hits, seventh multi-hit game of the season, 43rd of career.
- Grant Maiorana: with walk in the first, extended reached base streak to 16 straight games; 2 walks, ties season high.
- Phil Sciretta: did not reach base in four at bats, which ended his reached base streak at 19 games.
- Caples: 2 RBIs, first multi-RBI game of season, third of his career; third career home run; first start of the season.
- Cole Kragel: career-high 4.0 innings pitched; career-high four strikeouts; also struck out the side in the seventh.
