BLACKSBURG – Trailing 3-0 in the fifth, the Virginia Tech baseball team used a Hurricane error to plate two runs, but the Hokies would get no closer and No. 5 Miami took the game and won the ACC series with a 7-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at English Field.
Phil Sciretta knocked home Grant Maiorana for the only Tech RBI of the contest in the fifth inning, while Saige Jenco scored earlier in the frame on the Miami miscue.
Miami’s Danny Garcia threw seven innings and struck out seven to improve to 3-1 on the season, while Tech’s Jon Woodcock (1-3) went 6.2 innings and struck out five.
How the runs were scored
- Miami (13-3, 2-1 ACC) opened the scoring in the first on a two-run home run by Jacob Heyward then added a third run in the third on a Zach Collins RBI single.
- Tech (10-7, 1-2 ACC) had runners on first and second with one out in the fifth when Tom Stoffel grounded a ball back to Garcia. He threw to second but the ball was dropped, allowing Jenco, who singled, to score and Maiorana, who walked, to move to third. Sciretta followed with a sacrifice fly and Tech trailed 3-2.
- Christopher Barr singled home a run in the seventh and Collins hit a three-run home run in the ninth to complete the Hurricanes scoring.
Inside the Box
- Maiorana: with walk in fifth, extended reached base streak to 13 straight games.
- Sciretta: with single in second, extended on-base streak to all 17 games this year; fourth straight game with an RBI.
- Woodcock: 6.2 innings pitched, season-high; five strikeouts, season-high.
- Cole Kragel: 2.0 innings pitched, season-high.
Additional Notes
- Tech is now 2-10 in its ACC opening weekend.
- All-time, on this date, Tech is now 10-2 at home, losing only to North Carolina in 2009 (by a 7-3 score).
- This weekend marked the second highest ranking ever for Miami when Tech has faced them – the Hurricanes were No. 1 back in 2008. At English Field, when Miami is ranked, the Hokies are now 6-6 against them.

Tech will conclude its 11-game homestand with a game on Tuesday night at English Field. The Hokies welcome Liberty to Blacksburg for a contest that starts at 5:30 p.m.
