BLACKSBURG – The No. 5-ranked Miami Hurricanes scored in each of the last five innings to turn a 5-2 deficit into an 11-6 win over the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday afternoon in ACC action at English Field.
Saige Jenco had three hits and scored a pair of runs, while Grant Maiorana hit a two-run home run and Nick Anderson had a two-RBI double to lead the Hokies offense.
Out of the bullpen, Miami’s Andrew Cabezas picked up his first win of the season, while Bryan Garcia earned his fifth save with a two-inning outing. Connor Coward suffered his first loss of the year.
How the runs were scored
- Tech (10-6, 1-1 ACC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with Saige Jenco scoring on a Phil Sciretta sacrifice fly and Anderson driving in two with a double.
- Miami (12-3, 1-1 ACC) responded with two in the top of the second, with Johnny Ruiz hitting a solo home run and Edgar Michelangeli plating a run with a single.
- Maiorana put the Hokies up 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run that also scored Jenco.
- Miami answered with single runs in the fifth and sixth before taking its first lead of the series with three runs (two unearned) in the seventh. Michelangeli added an RBI single in the eighth to make it an 8-5 game.
- Jenco singled home a run in the eighth and the Hokies had runners at the corners with no outs before Miami brought in Garcia, who ended the threat and closed the game.
Inside the Box
- Jenco: 3 hits, 19th career three-hit game, 42nd career multi-hit game; 2 runs, 22nd career multi-run scoring game; 2 stolen bases, 5 for 6 this year, 35 of 43 in career.
- Maiorana: 2 RBIs, fourth multi-RBI game; second home run of the season; has reached base in 12 straight games.
- Sciretta: fourth double of season; extended on-base streak to all 16 games this year.
- Anderson: 2 RBIs, third multi-RBI game; fourth double of season.
- Andrew Mogg: 2 hits, 14th career multi-hit game.
- Sam Fragale: pinch-hit double, third double of season; second career pinch hit (other was a home run).
Additional Notes
- Tech turned its 12th double play of the season, the fourth behind the starter Kit Scheetz.
- March 12 has not been a good day for the Hokies as of late, as they’ve lost seven of their last eight dating back to 2003, including five straight at home.
