BLACKSBURG – Runs were at a premium during the first seven innings at English Field Friday night and Virginia Tech got a strong starting pitching performance from Packy Naughton to help the Hokies to a 5-2 victory over Quinnipiac in nonconference baseball action.

Naughton kept the Bobcats off the board through five frames, just long enough for the Hokies to strike first with three runs. The bullpen took over from there and a two-run eighth frame provided some insurance for the home team.

Naughton registered his first win of the season and improved to 1-2, while Aaron McGarity saved his first game of the year in the ninth. Quinnipiac starter Thomas Jankins dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

How the runs were scored

• Tech (6-3) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning by plating three runs. Matt Dauby scored on a bunt single by Grant Maiorana, which was followed by Tom Stoffel’s two-RBI single that brought home Saige Jenco and Maiorana.
• Quinnipiac (3-2) cut its deficit to one on Ryan Nelson’s two-out, two-RBI double to left center that scored Robert Pescitelli and Joseph Burns.
• The Hokies added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth when Nick Anderson scored Sam Fragale with a pinch-hit double and pinch-runner Rahiem Cooper coming home off the bat of Dauby.

Inside the Box

• Stoffel had three hits, his fourth three-hit game of his Tech career, and two RBIs, his third multi-RBI game of his career. He also notched his second game-winning RBI of the season.
• Maiorana scored his second game-winning run of the season.
• Phil Sciretta extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the fourth. He also stole a base, the second of his Tech career.
• With one swing, Anderson registered his first pinch-hit, his first collegiate hit, his first extra-base hit (a double) and his first collegiate RBI.
• Naughton struck out four to push his total for the season to 20, opposed to just three walks.
• Connor Coward tossed one inning and allowed his first run of the season over 7.2 innings.
• Paul Hall, Jr. threw 1.1 innings, which included a scoreless eighth.
• McGarity struck out the side in the ninth, the third time he has done that this season, and it was his fifth perfect inning this season. He has now struck out 15 batters this season over 7.0 innings, and notched his 100th career strikeout at Tech (101).

Additional Notes

• This was the first ever meeting between the two schools.
• Tech improves to 14-12-1 all-time on this date – March 4.
• The Hokies turned a pair of double plays in the game to give them six for the season.

Tech continues its 11-game homestand with a doubleheader Saturday against the Bobcats. First pitch of the first contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. Kit Scheetz will get the ball in the first game, while Nic Enright starts the second. For the Bobcats, it will be Robert Hitt and Hustin Thomas.
