NORFOLK, Va. – The Virginia Tech Hokies concluded the Old Dominion Baseball Tournament by using another offensive outburst to defeat Manhattan, 12-7, at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex Saturday afternoon.

Matt Dauby knocked in a career-high four runs, while Max Ponzurick and Joe Freiday, Jr. each added a two RBIs for the Hokies, who jumped out to a five-run advantage in the top of the first and held the lead the entire way.

Jon Woodcock came out of the pen and tossed 3.1 innings of relief to pick up the win and is now 1-1, while Ryan Takacs suffered the loss for the Jaspers and is 0-1.

How the runs were scored

• Tech (4-3) sent nine men to the plate in the top of the first and plated five runs. Grant Maiorana started the rally with an RBI single that scored Saige Jenco. Ponzurick then drew a bases loaded walk, Freiday, Jr. singled home two and Dauby had an RBI single to make it 5-0.
• Manhattan (1-2) got two runs back in the bottom of the frame on a two-RBI double by Matt Forlow.
• Phil Sciretta stayed hot at the plate, using an RBI single in the second to score Maiorana and it was 6-2.
• The Jaspers plated single runs in the third and fourth to claw within a pair of runs with Chris Reynolds and Jose Carrera collecting RBIs.
• Jenco doubled home Freiday, Jr. in the sixth and Ponzurick and Ryan Tufts added RBIs in the seventh to push the Tech advantage to 9-4.
• Manhattan used a three-run seventh with RBIs coming from Brendan Bissett and Fabian Pena to pull within 9-7.
• Dauby, though, put the game out of reach with a two-out, bases-clearing double in the eighth.

Inside the Box

• Jenco extended his reached-base streak to 27 straight with a walk in the first. He also stole a base (2-for-2, season; 32-for-39, career) and hit his fourth career triple. He added two more hits for his third multi-hit game of the season, 39th of his career (16th game with at least three hits).
• Maiorana stole his first career base and also scored two runs, his second multi-run scoring game.
• Sciretta extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the second. Also had a single in seventh to notch his fifth multi-hit game of the year, 23rd of his career. He scored a career-high three times as well, his sixth career multi-run scoring game.
• Sam Fragale was hit by two pitches and scored three times, giving him five career multi-run scoring games. He also singled in the eighth, extending his hitting streak to all seven games this season.
• Ponzurick knocked in two runs, his second straight game with at least two RBIs.
• Freiday, Jr. had two RBIs – first multi-RBI game of the season, second of career – and has at least one RBI in each of his four starts this year. Also had two hits – his third multi-hit game of his career.
• Nic Enright started his second career game for Tech and struck out three.
• Woodcock retired nine straight batters from the fourth through six frames, which included three strikeouts.
• Connor Coward has faced 17 batters this season and has not allowed a hit. He’s struck out eight and walked four.
• Aaron McGarity has tossed 5.0 innings this season and has 11 strikeouts. He also struck out the side in the ninth, the second time this season, third time in his career.

Additional Notes

• This was the first meeting ever between the two schools.
• Hokies improve to 11-5 on this date in their history.
• Tech scored at least 10 runs in four games in February, tying the 2011 squad for the second-most double digit outputs before March in school history, while the 2009 squad had seven.
• The Hokies have outscored their opponents by a 69-24 margin.

Tech will take a day off before welcoming Radford to English Field for the start of an 11-game homestand that will last 15 days. The game against the Highlanders is slated for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
