NORFOLK, Va. – In their second game of the Old Dominion Baseball Tournament, the Virginia Tech Hokies used an 11-run fourth inning to take a commanding lead and registered a 22-1 victory over the previously unbeaten ODU Monarchs on Saturday night at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

Fourteen Hokies scored at least one run in the contest, led by Grant Maiorana’s game-high three, while Phil Sciretta had a career night, going 5-for-6 at the plate, with two doubles, and notching seven RBIs.

Kit Scheetz was again masterful on the mound as he retired the first 10 batters he faced and did not allow a run through his six innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the year. The Monarchs’ Jake Joseph suffered the loss and is now 1-1 this season.

How the runs were scored

• Tech (3-3) sent 16 men to the plate in the fourth inning and saw the first 13 reach base, but only six were via a hit – including a two-RBI double by Sciretta, an RBI double by Max Ponzurick, a two-RBI single by Maiorana and another Sciretta RBI single – while three Hokies scored on wild pitches.
• They added three more in the sixth on an RBI single by Sam Fragale and a two-run home run by Ponzurick to make it 14-0.
• In the seventh, Sciretta plated Ryan Tufts and Saige Jenco with a single, then added two more RBIs in the eighth on a two-RBI double, followed by a two-RBI single by Fragale.
• Old Dominion (5-1) scored its only run (unearned) of the game in the seventh, when Chris Livers came home on a throwing error.

Inside the Box

• Jenco extended his reached-base streak to 26 straight with a walk in the fourth. He also scored twice for his 39th career multi-run scoring game.
• Maiorana had two hits, his second multi-hit game of the season, and three runs, his first career multi-run scoring game.
• Tom Stoffel had two hits, his eighth career multi-hit game at Tech.
• Sciretta notched his fifth career multi-run scoring game, his 22nd career multi-hit game, fourth this season, and his sixth career multi-RBI game, while extending his hitting streak to all six games this season.
• Fragale extended his hitting streak to all six games this season, while notching his sixth career multi-hit game, while also registering his fourth career multi-run scoring and multi-RBI games.
• Ponzurick hit his first career home run and had his fourth career multi-hit and multi-run scoring games, while recording his second career multi-RBI game.
• Joe Freiday, Jr. scored two runs, his second career multi-run scoring game.
• Tufts also scored two times and now has eight career multi-run scoring games.
• Ryan Lauria, Joey Sullivan and Nick Anderson all appeared in their first game of the season, while Lauria and Anderson pitched for the first time in their Tech careers.

Additional Notes

• The Hokies improved to 59-17 overall against Old Dominion, including a 27-10 record in Norfolk.
• This was the first time Tech played at ODU since the 2000 season.
• All-time, the Hokies are 11-5 on this date and have won three straight.
• Tech scored 22 runs for the first time since March 15, 2010 (Columbia, 22-10) and the first time on the road since April 15, 2009 (at High Point, 22-13).
• It was the first time since April 21, 2002 (Georgetown, 35-4) that the Hokies beat a team by more than 20 runs at home or on the road.
• Sciretta becomes the first Hokie to have five hits in one game since Chad Pinder (vs. Bradley, 2/18/12) and the first Hokie to have seven RBIs in a game since Bryan Thomas (at Campbell, 2/18/06).
