BLACKSBURG – Trailing by five runs after just two innings, the Virginia Tech baseball team made a come-back, but it came up short as Georgia Tech recorded the 7-6 victory in the final game of a three-game set at English Field on Sunday afternoon giving the Yellow Jackets the series win.
In the loss, it marked the first time this season in an ACC contest that the Hokies did not at least lead once in a game that ended in nine innings. The only other game Virginia Tech did not hold a lead was the 10-inning loss to Clemson, in which no team scored in the first nine frames.
Georgia Tech (21-11, 7-8 ACC) plated the five second-inning runs as the team sent nine men to the plate. Six of the first seven batters reached base, the lone one, Connor Justus, drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. A two-RBI double by Daniel Spingola made it 4-0 before Hokie starter Kit Scheetz got the final two men – one on a grounder that brought in the fifth run.
The Hokies (17-16, 7-8 ACC) cut into that deficit in the third as Saige Jenco (RBI double) and Alex Perez and Erik Payne (RBI singles) knocked in runs to make it 5-3.
However, Will Bailey led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run and another RBI collected by Spingola pushed the Yellow Jacket lead to 7-3.
Virginia Tech put up another three-spot on the board in the home half of the sixth with Mac Caples scoring on a Sam Fragale single and Perez driving in Andrew Mogg and Fragale with a bases-loaded, two-out single.
Luke Scherzer, who came on in relief of Scheetz in the fourth, threw the final four frames he was in the game scoreless. He went a total of five innings and struck out a career-high tying six batters. He tossed a perfect seventh and eighth before an error in the ninth would turn into a one-out, bases loaded situation.
Aaron McGarity came in from the pen and got a pop out and a ground out to end the threat and set up another chance for the Hokies to celebrate with a walk-off victory.
With two outs, Caples walked and Sean Keselica singled, but pinch-hitter Phil Sciretta, who has four pinch-hit RBI singles this season, struck out to end the game.
Brandon Gold improved to 4-1 on the season with the win, while Matthew Gorst picked up a save after tossing 3.1 innings of relief and not allowing the tying run. Scheetz suffered the loss.
Perez ended the day with three hits and three RBIs, while Jenco, Fragale and Rahiem Cooper each had two hits. Fragale was the only Hokie to cross the plate twice in the contest.
The Hokies return to English Field for a pair of midweek games. They host Radford at 6 p.m. on Monday night and then Charlotte at 5:30 on Tuesday.
