WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – In the final game of a three-game baseball series on Sunday at Gene Hooks Field, Wake Forest used six home runs to help it to an 12-4 victory and win the ACC series over Virginia Tech two games to one.
Brendon Hayden got the Hokies’ offense started in the first with a two-run home run that scored Erik Payne and put Tech on top 2-0. It was his team-leading fifth home run of the year and the 18th of his Hokie career.
Wake Forest (11-5, 2-1 ACC) answered, though, with the long ball, hitting a pair of solo home runs – one each in the first and fourth – and Stuart Fairchild’s two-run shot in the fourth put the Demon Deacons up 4-2.
Tech (7-8, 1-2 ACC) scratched a run across the board in the top of the sixth on a pinch-hit RBI single by Phil Sciretta that plated Mac Caples to cut its deficit to 4-3.
However, the Demon Deacons used more home runs to increase its lead, hitting three in the home half of the sixth with Will Craig’s second solo shot of the game making it 9-3 and all but sealing the series win for Wake Forest.
Sam Fragale hit a solo home run in the ninth to provide the final run for the Hokies - it was his first career hit for Tech.
Out of the pen, Wake’s Connor Johnstone picked up his first win of the season while Jon Woodcock suffered the loss and dropped his record to 2-1.
Tech will take Monday off before travelling across the state to face William & Mary in a pair of midweek games in Williamsburg, Va. Tuesday’s game is set for a 7 p.m. start, while Wednesday is slated for 4 p.m.
