BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Runs were at a premium all weekend for the Virginia Tech baseball team and that was no different on Monday, the final day of the Campbell Invitational at Jim Perry Stadium. The Hokies fell 4-3 to Rider in 12 innings in the first game of a doubleheader, then lost a 3-1 decision to the Camels in the nightcap.

The Hokies’ other two games of the invite were close as well, one-run games, as they defeated the hosts, 6-5 on Saturday, and lost to the Broncs by an identical 4-3 count. The weekend drops the Hokies record to 3-4 overall after two weeks of the 2015 season.

Rider (2-2) got its win over Tech on Monday by scoring an unearned run in the top of the 12th, and then Eric Thomas earned his second save of the weekend with a scoreless home half.

Trailing 3-0 after the top half of the fifth, the Hokies used an Andrew Mogg RBI single in the fifth and a pair of RBI singles by Phil Sciretta (in the sixth and eighth) to tie the game at 3-3.

Tech had its chances to win the game in walk-off fashion, but left the bases loaded in the ninth and with runners on the corners with one out in the 11th, the Broncs ended the threat with a double play.

Jon Woodcock started on the mound for the Hokies and tossed a career-high seven innings and struck out a career high eight strikeouts. Chris Monaco (1.2 IP, 3 K), Packy Naughton (1.2, K) and Luke Scherzer (0.2, K) relieved Woodcock and Alex Perez (1.0, K) took the loss due to the unearned run.

Against Campbell (5-2), the Camels struck first with an Anthony Lopez RBI groundout that scored Cedric Mullins, who doubled to lead off his team’s first and moved to third on a sac bunt by Steven Leonard.

Tech answered back in the third and tied the game thanks to Ryan Tufts. He picked up the Hokies first hit, moved to second on a sac bunt, advanced to third on a grounder and then scored on a wild pitch.

Kit Scheetz started on the mound for the Hokies against the Camels, and after the first frame, retired 18 of 19 batters to keep Campbell off the board. Sean Kennedy relieved him in the eighth and surrendered the deciding runs on a sac fly and a wild pitch.

Again, the Hokies had some chances late, leaving the bases loaded in the eighth and stranding two runners in the ninth.
