Six Hokies set to compete at the Southern Scuffle

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech will have six wrestlers compete this weekend at the prestigious Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., from Jan. 1-2, 2018. Live scoring can be found on FloArena and a live stream can be seen on FloWrestling.

Redshirt sophomore Cody Hughes and freshman Hunter Bolen will both wrestle in the 174-pound field for the Hokies while freshmen CJ Manley at 133 pounds, Mekhi Lewis at 165, Stanley Smeltzer at 184 and John Borst at 197 will be wrestling unattached.

Manley, who’s 12-2 this season, is seeded sixth at 133 pounds and Lewis is seeded seventh at 165. This weekend marks the first time since 2012 that the Hokies have sent wrestlers to the Scuffle.

Hughes is 10-6 on the season and Bolen is 8-6 overall and 2-4 in duals as a true freshman. In his last time out, Bolen pinned West Virginia’s Parker VonEgidy in 4:48 in Tech’s 30-6 dual meet win over the Mountaineers on Dec. 22.

All four of Tech’s freshmen competing this weekend have won titles at open tournaments this season. Lewis leads the group as he enters the New Year with a 14-0 record and championships at the Hokie Open, Wolfpack Open and Storm Open on his ledger.

The Hokies return to dual meet action on Jan. 13-14 at the Hampton Coliseum for the Virginia Duals.
