Moore and McFadden win titles at Cleveland State Open
McFadden goes 5-0 in his first action of the season
December 17, 2016
CLEVELAND - Sophomore David McFadden and freshman Brent Moore went a combined a 10-0 to take home individual championships wrestling unattached for the Hokies at the Cleveland State Open on Saturday.
Moore, who finished 5-1 to finish fifth at the Lake Erie Storm Open two weeks ago, continued his hot start two by taking home the 141-pound title. He started off with a convincing 16-0 tech fall over Matthew Dowler of Edinboro and pinned Kent State’s Collin Adkins in the quarterfinals before winning by medical forfeit in the finals.
In his first action since having surgery that repaired a knee injury suffered during the 2016 NCAA Championships, McFadden looked like hadn't missed a beat as he tallied two TFs, a major decision and two pins in five matches. After pinning Eric Fasnacht of Buffalo in 2:03, it took McFadden only a second longer to pin Eastern Michigan’s Devan Marry in the finals, giving him the 165-pound title.
Also reaching the podium for the Hokies wrestling unattached were sophomore Cody Hughes at 174 and freshman Andrew Dunn at 285. Dunn dropped his opening round to Jacob Robb of Mercyhurst but went on to win four-straight bouts to reach the finals. It was sweet revenge for Dunn in the finals as the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania product pinned Robb in 3:39 to place fifth. Hughes’ sixth place finish was highlighted by a 12-7 decision of Michigan State’s Daniel Kruse in the second round.
