BLACKSBURG – The fifth-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team went 1-1 on the final day of action at the 36th Virginia Duals, falling 16-14 in the finals to #18 Iowa State.
The Hokies downed Arizona State in the semifinal round to open Saturday’s action. The Hokies picked up back-to-back-to-back bonus victories to open the match, with two major decision coming from Joey Dance and Solomon Chishko and Dennis Gustafson notching his second fall of the weekend. Freshmen David McFadden and Cody Hughes won consecutive decisions at 165 and 174 pounds. Zack Zavatsky recorded the sixth Hokie victory of the day with a 16-1 technical fall, propelled by back-to-back four-point near falls. The afternoon came to a close after second-ranked Ty Walz and ninth-ranked Tanner Hall battled for three periods, with Walz holding on for a 6-5 win, moving to 13-0 in 2015-16.
In a rematch from the season opener, Dance picked up another win over an Iowa State 125 pounder, this time dispatching Kyle Larson 6-1. Gustafson lost a close fought battle at 133, dropping a 6-5 decision on a last second takedown. A unsportsmanlike conduct penalty docked a team point from the Hokies, who trailed 3-2 after two bouts. Chishko and Sal Mastriani scored six team points with 6-2 and 6-3 decisions, respectively. The Hokies fell in the next three bouts and didn’t score against until Zavatsky held on for a 3-0 decision over Dane Pestana. Wrestling up a weight class due to an injury at 197, Austin Gable held his own at 197 pounds but couldn’t pull out a win, losing a tight 8-6 bout. Walz, facing a different ISU heavyweight than the last time the teams met, worked all three periods for a pin, which would ensure a Virginia Tech victory, but wasn’t able to pull it off, coming home with a 10-3 win instead. Tech fell to the Cyclones by a final score of 16-14.
The Hokies will be back in action this weekend, hosting a pair of matches against UNC and UNI at the Moss Arts Center. Tickets can be purchased for $10 ahead of time at hokietickets.com or at the door for $15. More information about these events can be found at HokieSports.com leading up to the weekend.
Coach Dresser Sounds Off
"I was proud of our effort today. Obviously we had some bad luck tonight but considering we competed with a fraction of our lineup, I can't complain. Great teams are like family, they stick together in good times and bad. I hope these guys think like family. We ALL have to fight and work together. If that happens, we can be great."
