EVANSTON, Ill. - Eleven members of the Virginia Tech wrestling team began action at the Midlands Championships on Thursday at Welsh-Ryan Arena on the campus of Northwestern University. After one day of competition, the Hokies sit in a tie for seventh place with 43.5 points.

Six of the 11 Hokies competing drew seeds for the event with Devin Carter drawing the No. 2 seed at 133 pounds. Also grabbing seeds were: Jarrod Garnett (eighth at 125 pounds), Zach Neibert (sixth at 141 pounds), Pete Yates (sixth at 165 pounds), John Dickson (7th at 184 pounds) and Nick Vetterlein (10th at 197 pounds).

After one day, three Tech wrestlers are still alive in the championship bracket with three alive in the consolations. Five have been eliminated. Garnett, Carter and Yates will all compete in Friday’s semifinal matches while Yates, Moon and Dickson are all still alive in the consolation bracket.

Below are the results from the first day for the Tech competitors. Action wraps up Friday with two sessions.
