RALEIGH, N.C. - Members of the Virginia Tech wrestling squad took to the mats for the Wolfpack Open Sunday at the Raleigh Convention Center with numerous Hokies placing in their respective weight class. Four Hokies won their weight division while three placed second and two others finished fourth.

Claiming titles for the Hokies were Devin Carter (133), Nick Brascetta (149), Nick Vetterlein (197) and Chris Penny (heavyweight). Cameron Hurd (157), Austin Gabel (174) and John Dickson (184) finished second. Also placing were: Erik Spjut (fourth at 125 pounds), Nick Murray (fourth at 149 pounds) and Matt Stephens (fourth at 157 pounds).

For Brascetta, his day was highlighted by beating returning All-American Derek Valenti from Virginia, 3-2, in the championship bout. Although he was wrestling unattached, Brascetta has had a big first two weekends for the Hokies.

The team will be back in action next weekend for a big dual meet at No. 13 Ohio State on Sunday at 4 p.m. The Hokies were ranked 14th in the first poll.

Below are the results for all of the Tech wrestlers, both attached and unattached. Unattached wrestlers’ results do not count toward official season results, but do toward NCAA qualification and matches against non-college competitors (NRVWC for example) do not count for official season results nor toward NCAA qualification. Matches against non-Division I wrestlers do not count toward NCAA qualification, either, but do count toward official season results.
