Orange sweeps Maroon in volleyball scrimmage
Hokies play in tune-up before season begins next weekend

BLACKSBURG – On the new court in Cassell Coliseum in front of its home fans, Virginia Tech Volleyball squared off in the Maroon versus Orange scrimmage Saturday afternoon. The Orange squad, mixed of starters and reserves, won 4-0 over the Maroon team led by Kaity Smith’s 15 kills and Rhegan Mitchell’s 43 assists.
Smith, a freshman, was one of five newcomers who saw action. The Kentucky native led all rookies in kills, while other freshman outside hitter, Ester Talamazzi, tallied 12 kills.
Freshmen middle blockers Marisa Cerchio and Kai Young recorded six kills and four kills, respectively. On the back row, Kylie Thomas chipped in 10 digs.
In the first two sets, it was tightly contested as the Orange team edged out both victories by a score of 25-23. Sophomore Carol Raffety had a match-high 12 digs, including seven in the first set.
The Orange team took command in sets three and four winning by a margin of 17 points in both sets combined.
Seniors Stacey Christy and Cara Cunningham played lights out as both hit over .500, while junior Jaila Tolbert led all hitters with 18 kills.

The two teams combined for 12 service aces, including five from Talamazzi.

Before the 3 p.m. scrimmage, the Hokies put on a kids clinic where numerous youngsters learned the skills of volleyball.

WHAT IS NEXT
The Hokies will hit the road next weekend as they start the season in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Tech will take on South Dakota State, Idaho State and Milwaukee in a four-team tournament.
