Tech excels at Hokie Twilight Qualifier

BLACKSBURG - The Tech track & field team continued its final week of competition before the ACC Championships at the Hokie Twilight Qualifier, collecting several top finishes at the second of three meets this week.

To begin the day, Chris Uhle dominated the men's pole vault with a first-place finish. His 5.47-meter (17-11.25) clearance ranks fifth in program history. Deakin Volz placed third while Brad Johnson and Jeffrey Linta took fourth and fifth, respectively.

The women's side collected four top-five marks, including two second-place personal-best clearances. Emma King and Erinn Shaal both cleared 3.91 meters (12-10) to rank ninth in program history.

The Hokies' success continued onto the track as Shalonda Mitchell and Alyssa Shupe took second and third, respectively, in the 400 meters.

Emily Beatty led the squad with a first-place finish in her first colligate race in 3,000-meter steeplechase. In the same event, Collin Hahn placed third, clocking in at 9:50.02.

Tech dominated the 1,500 meters, taking first through fifth. Vincent Ciattei led the group with his 3:50.12 time head of Diego Zarate in second, Peter Seufer in third, Ashkan Mohammadi in fourth, and Kevin Cianfarini in fifth.

Shannon Quinn collected another top mark for Tech with her 2:12.23-time in the 800 meters while Anne Grumbine took fourth. Neil Gourley led the men's side with a third-place, 1:54.06-finish.

In the 5,000 meters, Brent Musselman clocked in at 14:55.16 to place first while Andrew Goldman and Daniel Rau took second and third, respectively. Amanda Swaak led the women's team with her 17:57.51-time to finish second while Jennifer Fleming and Julie Wiemerslage placed fourth and fifth.

Andrew Eason wrapped up the track events with a personal record 31:57.96-time to place first in the 10,000 meters.

The Hokies wrap up their regular season at NC State on Friday afternoon.
