Edmunds brothers make history at NFL Draft

Danville natives become first siblings selected in first round of same draft

DALLAS - Tremaine and Terrell Edmunds were both selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, becoming the first pair of brothers to both be selected in the first round of the same draft.

Tremaine was the 16th overall selection by the Buffalo Bills, while Terrell was the 28th overall pick, going to Pittsburgh. The Edmunds brothers became the seventh and eighth Virginia Tech players since 2000 to be picked in the draft’s initial round. The 83rd annual National Football League Player Selection Meeting continues on Friday evening and concludes on Saturday.

Tremaine became the second-youngest player drafted in the common era (since 1967) when he selected on Thursday (19 years, 11 months and 25 days). DT Amobi Okoye (D1-Houston) in 2007 was selected at 19 years, 10 months and 19 days old).

Based on feedback from various draft prognosticators, the two most likely candidates to come off the board for the Hokies could be DT Tim Settle. Potential Saturday selections for Tech could include CBs Brandon Facyson and Greg Stroman, as well as G Wyatt Teller and WR Cam Phillips. There’s always a possibility a club could take a flier on another VT alum.

And don’t forget, the “second phase” of the college player acquisition process takes place when teams sign undrafted players as free agents as LB Andrew Motuapuaka and others could potentially land a roster spot for upcoming NFL mini-camps. VIRGINIA TECH DRAFT NOTES

  • At least one Virginia Tech player has been selected every season dating back to 1993.
  • Thirteen Tech alums have been first-round picks.
  • Terrell and Tremaine Edmunds are the first set of brothers to be selected in the same NFL Draft class since David (D6-Arizona) and Chris Carter (D5-Pittsburgh) in 2011.
  • Over the past 25 years, only two other sets have brothers have been tabbed in the same NFL Draft class.
    • 2004 – Shawn Andrews (D1-Philadelphia) & Stacey Andrews (D4-Cincinnati)
    • 1997 – Ronde Barber (D2-Tampa Bay) & Tiki Barber (D3-N.Y. Giants)
  • The eldest Edmunds brother (Trey) is currently a running back with the New Orleans Saints after lettering at Tech from 2013-15.
  • The patriarch of the Edmunds family (Ferrell) entered the NFL as a third-round pick of Miami (73rd overall) in the 1988 NFL Draft. He played in 89 career games for the Dolphins and Seahawks, catching 148 passes for 1,894 yards with 12 TDs. He earned Pro Bowl berths for Miami following the 1989 and 1990 seasons.
  • Virginia Tech is the only school that has been home to four brothers who have all been selected in the NFL Draft – the Fuller brothers.
    • S Vincent Fuller (D4-Tennessee) 108th overall in 2005
    • WR Corey Fuller (D6-Detroit) 171st overall in 2013
    • CB Kyle Fuller (D1-Chicago) 14th overall in 2014
    • CB Kendall Fuller (D3-Washington) 84th overall in 2015
    • Kendall was traded from Washington to Kansas City in the off-season, while Kyle signed a long-term contract with Chicago. Corey spent training camp with New Orleans in 2018.
  • Tremaine Edmunds is ranked the No. 1 linebacker in the 2018 Draft class by NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock.
  • Tech’s most prolific draft years all came during the Frank Beamer era with a record nine Hokies selected in the 2006 NFL Draft, headlined by a pair of second-round selections in DB Jimmy Williams (37th overall – Atlanta) and DE Darryl Tapp (63rd overall – Seattle).
  • The Hokies had eight players selected in both 2002 and 2008.
  • Thursday marked only the second time in program history that Virginia Tech had multuple first round picks after DeAngelo Hall and Kevin Jones were both picked in the first round in 2004.
  • Bud Foster has now had 43 players drafted and 11 first and second round picks since becoming defensive coordinator in 1996.
