Hokies have plenty of Super Bowl History, playing in 27 title games

BLACKSBURG – Eugene Chung, Chris Peduzzi and Keith Gray were part of a Philadelphia Eagles team that defeated the New England Patriots Sunday Night 41-33. With the win, the Eagles claimed their first title of the Super Bowl Era.

Here’s the complete list of all Tech alums who have been to the professional football’s ultimate game:

Tech Alums in the Super Bowl

Three former Hokies were on the sidelines for the Eagles on Sunday Night at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis for Super Bowl LII. Eugene Chung serves as assistant offensive line/tight ends/run game coach for the Eagles. Chung became the initial Tech offensive lineman to earn first-team All-America honors, doing so as a senior in 1991. He allowed just a single sack on 730 snaps that season. The 13th overall selection in the 1992 NFL Draft by New England, Chung also spent time with Jacksonville and Indianapolis during his playing career before embarking on a coaching career. This will be Chung’s first Super Bowl appearance as a coach or as a player. His son, Kyle, currently serves as an offensive lineman for the Hokies.

Two other Tech alums are also members of Philadelphia’s football staff. Keith Gray works as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Eagles after working for Tech in 1994. Chris Peduzzi, who lettered for the Hokies from 1992-94, serves as Philadelphia’s Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer.

There have been five Super Bowls with at least one Hokie on each team. The first such occurrence came in Super Bowl XXV when DE Bruce Smith of the Buffalo Bills and CB Roger Brown of the N.Y. Giants were both part of a memorable title title at Tampa Stadium. Despite a safety from Smith, the NFL’s career sack leader, the Bills suffered a heartbreaking 20-19 defeat.

Super Bowl XXXI also featured a pair of Hokies as the Green Bay Packers and WR Antonio Freeman defeated the New England Patriots and TE John Burke by a 35-21 margin in the Louisiana Superdome. Freeman hauled in an 81-yard TD pass from QB Brett Favre as the Packers broke the game open in the second quarter.

The following year Freeman and the Packers returned to the Super Bowl. This time the Denver Broncos and RB Vaughn Hebron prevailed by a 31-24 margin in Super Bowl XXXII in San Diego. Hebron returned to the title game the following year as the Broncos repeated as World Champions with a 34-19 win over RB Ken Oxendine and the Atlanta

Falcons in Miami.

Super Bowl XLIX was the last time two Hokies were on opposing teams with T Vinston Painter a member of the Broncos. S Kam Chancellor earned a Super Bowl ring in that contest as Seattle pounded Denver by a 43-8 margin at Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Only two Hokies have reached the Super Bowl three or more times. College Football Hall of Fame inductee WR Carroll Dale made appeared in both Super Bowl I and II with the Green Bay Packers to earn a pair of title rings. He made it a third time with the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl VII. In his three appearances, Dale caught eight receptions 102 yards.

Pro Football Hall of Fame DE Bruce Smith who made four straight Super Bowl trips with the Buffalo Bills (Super Bowl XXV- XXVIII). In his four appearances, Smith totaled 15 tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble.

In addition to Dale, two other Hokies hold the distinction of earned a pair of Super Bowl rings. Hebron did it with the Broncos, while DT Tom Beasley also was also part of back-to-back World Champions as Pittsburgh claimed victories in Super Bowl XIII and XIV.
