Hokies Headed to Camping World Bowl in Orlando on Dec. 28

Tech's 25-year bowl streak continues, as Hokies will face Oklahoma State

BLACKSBURG – Head coach Justin Fuente will seek to guide the Hokies to a second straight 10-win season, as No. 22 Virginia Tech (9-3) will face No. 17 Oklahoma State (9-3) in the Camping World Bowl on Dec. 28 in Orlando, Florida.

Tech’s current bowl streak of 25 consecutive seasons is the longest active streak recognized by the NCAA and is tied as the third-longest streak in college football history. Kickoff is slated for 5:15 p.m. at Camping World Stadium, where Tech last played in the 2016 ACC Championship Game against Clemson. This contest will mark the third ever meeting between Virginia Tech and Oklahoma State. The Cowboys won a 24-16 decision in Stillwater in 1971, while the Hokies registered a 34-32 win in Blacksburg in 1972.

“I know Hokie Nation will be anxious to join us in Orlando for the Camping World Bowl,” Fuente said. “Our entire team would like to send our seniors out on a winning note. The opportunity to win 10 games for a second consecutive season is a challenge our squad will embrace. This team has earned the right to play a quality opponent in head coach Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State. Our staff will do everything we can to prepare and give these young men a chance to hopefully conclude the season on a winning note. Our team is looking forward to the game and hopefully seeing the stands packed with Hokies at Camping World Stadium.”

All Hokie Club members who pre-ordered tickets through the postseason ticket ordering process will have their requests fulfilled.

Tech has won three consecutive bowl games and four of its past five. Tech’s current bowl streak began with a 45-20 win over Indiana in the 1993 Independence Bowl. Oklahoma State posted a pair of wins over a pair of teams that were ranked in the top five of the AP Top 25 at the time they played – 50-39 over No. 22 West Virginia and 49-42 over No. 24 Iowa State. The Cowboys ascended as high as No. 6 in the AP Top 25 this season.

League member schools and its bowl partners agreed upon the bowl selection process. The process includes parameters to be followed by the bowls, as they are selecting the representatives from the ACC.

Virginia Tech’s coaching staff has strong ties to the state of Oklahoma. Fuente is a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma and began his collegiate playing career at the University of Oklahoma. Offensive line coach Vance Vice played at Oklahoma State from 1985-89 and was a teammate of Mike Gundy. Vice is a native of Bristow, Oklahoma. Offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen is a native of Texhoma, Oklahoma and spent time at Oklahoma State as both a graduate assistant coach and a quality control coach.
