Student practice set for April 18; an inspirational Hokies story

BLACKSBURG – The Hokies conducted their most extensive scrimmage of the spring Saturday at Lane Stadium. Following individual drills, head coach Justin Fuente and his staff took the wraps off the quarterbacks, permitting limited contact on the signal callers in 11-on-11 work. Tech returns to the field for its 10th practice of the spring on Tuesday.

Here’s a look at some of the best images from Saturday’s scrimmage.

Before the Hokies take the field Tuesday, Fuente is anticipated to provide an update on Tech’s quarterback competition. Quarterbacks Josh Jackson, A.J. Bush and Hendon Hooker will address the media following the head coach. We’ll have full live coverage, plus a wrap-up with video and transcripts.

Student practice set for April 18

For the second spring, Fuente is opening a portion of practice to Virginia Tech students. More details will be released this week, but Tech students with a valid ID may enter Lane Stadium and view practice from the lower level of the west stands (press box side). Restroom facilities will be open, but no concessions will be available.

Following the conclusion of practice, students will be permitted on the field for 15 minutes to take selfies with football student-athletes (no autographs permitted). Once a 15-minute period concludes, the team and students will clear the field. Students who have reserved their 2017 student season tickets can pick up their complimentary stadium blanket following the conclusion of practice.

Kickoff for the 2016 Spring Game is set for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23. The event is free and open to the public.

If you haven’t reserved your student season tickets, there’s still time.

Inspirational story from the Hurd family

If the name Caleb Hurd rings a bell for Virginia Tech fans, you may remember him as a special teamer and holder for former head coach Frank Beamer during the 1990s. A four-year letterman from 1996-99, Hurd held for plenty of big Shayne Graham kicks during his career and now serves as a gasman on the NASCAR crew of Denny Hamlin for Joe Gibbs’ Racing.

In case you missed it, FOX Sports aired a segment on the Hurd family and how they dealt with the premature birth of their daughter — and how it’s changed his perspective on life and his job.

Could Woody Baron be a day three draftee?

Pro Football Focus College took a look at the potential of All-ACC defensive tackle Woody Baron at the next level. The publication called Baron “the best developmental interior pass rusher in this class.” Check out the full scouting report below.
