Fuente sets rules for Spring Game, more Hokies news
Guarantee seats for the Clemson game with a season ticket
April 7, 2017
BLACKSBURG – The Hokies conducted their eighth practice of spring Thursday evening, as the squad continued situational work. Both the Tuesday and Thursday practice sessions this week concluded with 11-on-11 end-of-game scenarios. Head coach Justin Fuente and his staff expect to put the squad through a closed scrimmage at Lane Stadium on Saturday morning.
A pair of notable fathers were at practice on Thursday evening. Three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Robert Porcher was on the sidelines observing practice. The former Detroit Lions star also was inducted into the Black College Hall of Fame earlier this year. His son, Robert IV, signed with the Hokies in February. Also on hand was Fred Jackson, father of quarterback Josh Jackson. The elder Jackson was a longtime collegiate coach, spending the bulk of his career at the University of Michigan.
Here’s a look at some of the best images Thursday’s workout.
Spring Game rules set
The Maroon-Orange Spring Game kicks off at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. Fuente’s plans for the game call for the squad to participate in four 12-minute quarters (running clock). The Orange squad (offense) will be on the home sideline, with the Maroon squad (defense) on the visiting sideline. The quarterbacks, who will be wearing gold jerseys, will not be tackled. Each team will receive one timeout in the last two minutes of each half. Expect a 10-minute intermission.
Special teams will be limited in this setting to reduce the risk of injury. There will be no rush on field goals and extra points. In punting situations, only the punter, snapper and return man will be on the field with the ball being placed where the return man fields the ball. There will be no kickoffs. The ball will be placed automatically at the 35-yard line following scores.
Here’s a breakdown of the scoring system for the spring game – with only one score possible per drive.
- Offensive Scoring
- Touchdown = 6 points
- Extra Point = 1 point
- Field Goal = 3 points
- Defensive Scoring
- Turnovers = 7 points
- 3 and out = 3 points
- Stop = 1 point
Reserve your seat for Clemson, five other home games
Just a friendly reminder to reserve season tickets while time lasts. A season ticket is the only way to guarantee a seat at Lane Stadium when Clemson visits Blacksburg on Sept. 30. No single-game sales of Clemson tickets are anticipated, so purchasing season tickets remains the best way to save spot for all six Saturday games at Lane.
2017 season tickets
As of Friday morning, fewer than 200 student tickets were still available for the 2017 season opener against West Virginia at FedExField. Make sure to get those tickets while available.

Sam’s the Man
Even though his eligibility on the field has expired for Virginia Tech, Sam Rogers added another notable honor to his resume. The 2017 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 grade-point average or better throughout their college careers, named Rogers as a member of its exclusive group. Rogers graduated from Virginia Tech in December with a degree in human nutrition, foods and exercise.
