Effect games, Homecoming dates set for 2017 football season

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech Athletics Department announced special dates for for the 2017 football season on Monday.

  • White Effect – Military Appreciation/Hall of Fame Weekend, ODU (Sept. 23)
  • Maroon Effect – Clemson (Sept. 30)
  • Homecoming/Orange Effect – North Carolina (Oct. 21)

The Virginia Tech Student Government Association once again will sponsor a design contest for Maroon and Orange Effect t-shirts. The winning submission for each design will receive $200. This year’s slogans are “This is Homefield Advantage” (Maroon Effect) and “Blacksburg Built” (Orange Effect).

Shirts for all three “effect games” will be available for purchase beginning at the 2017 Maroon-Orange Spring Game on April 22 and at the University Bookstore thereafter.

The 2017 Military Appreciation Day will take place against ODU on Sept. 23. This contest also will serve as the annual White Effect game. Virginia Tech Athletics will work with local military organizations and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets to honor our veterans, as well as the men and women currently serving our nation. The 2017 Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame class will also be recognized during the game.

Shirt sales from the White Effect/Military Appreciation shirt benefit the Fisher House Foundation best known for its network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment.

A rematch of the 2016 ACC Championship Game against defending national champion Clemson highlights Tech’s six-game home schedule. The only way to guarantee a seat for the Maroon Effect game vs. Clemson on Sept. 30 is to renew or purchase season tickets. Virginia Tech season ticket renewals began Thursday with pricing remaining at $350 for a fourth consecutive year. As a special “thank you” for loyal fans, any account that renews by Feb. 16 will receive a complimentary Hokies stadium blanket (one per account) available for pickup at the Maroon-Orange Spring Game.

Homecoming on Oct. 21 against North Carolina also will serve as the 2017 Orange Effect game. Tech’s home slate also includes Saturday home contests against ACC Coastal Division foes North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Duke. In addition, non-conference foe Old Dominion will face the Hokies for the inaugural time on Sept. 23.

The Hokies are led by head coach Justin Fuente, who earned consensus ACC Coach of the Year honors in 2016, guiding the Hokies to a 10-4 record and the ACC Coastal Division title in his initial season in Blacksburg. Dating back to the 1999 season — when Frank Beamer coached Virginia Tech to its first 11-win season and a berth in the national championship game — only Oklahoma (14) has registered more seasons with double-digit victories than Virginia Tech (12) among Power Five programs over that span.
