Motuapuaka earns ACC Linebacker Player of the Week honors

Linebacker Andrew Motuapuaka earned his first ACC weekly honor of his career

BLACKSBURG – Following a stellar defensive production over in-state rival Virginia last weekend, redshirt junior Andrew Motuapuaka has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Linebacker Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday.

Today’s honor is the first career weekly award for Motuapuaka, as he led Tech’s defense with six tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery for a touchdown in the Hokies’ 52-10 win over the Cavaliers.

Motuapuaka had a huge defensive third quarter, as he intercepted Virginia’s quarterback Matt Johns with 11:27 remaining in the period to set up a Tech field goal. Five minutes later, Mook Reynolds knocked the ball away from Virginia’s quarterback Conner Brewer. Motuapuaka scooped up the loose ball and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown.

Motuapuaka now has scored four touchdowns in his career. Three of his touchdowns have come on fumble returns, with the other coming on an interception return.

The Hokies will face Clemson, the Atlantic Divisional Champions, in the ACC Championship Game held on Saturday, Dec. 3. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. at the Camping World Stadium.
