BLACKSBURG — Junior kicker Joey Slye has been selected to the Groza Award Preseason Watch List, the award’s committee has announced.
Slye was a semifinalist last season for the Groza Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top placekicker.
Slye went 23-for-30 on field goals as a sophomore, with 13 of them coming from between the 40- and 49-yard line. The Stafford, Virginia native’s 23 made field goals ranked fourth in the ACC and tied the Hokies’ single-season record set by Dustin Keys in 2008. His 30 field goals attempted ranked second in the conference.
After posting 110 total points in 2015, Slye ranks 10th in the Tech record books with 203 career total points. His 43 career made field goals is fifth all time among Tech placekickers.
The Lou Groza Award is presented by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. The award is named after former Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns player Lou Groza.
