Hokies add JUCO speedster in Henri Murphy
Highly-coveted receiver/defensive back will be eligible for 2017 season

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente announced Thursday the Hokies have signed junior college player Henri Murphy to a national letter-of-intent (NLI). Murphy will join the Hokies’ program this summer, but will have to sit out the 2016 season due to transfer rules.

Murphy comes to Blacksburg from White Hall, Ark., by way of East Central Community College. At East Central, he helped the No. 10 Warriors to a 2015 C.H.A.M.P.S Heart of Texas Bowl victory after catching four passes for 68 yards. In all, he had 14 receptions for 257 yards and two touchdowns during the 2015 season.

Coming out of Dollarway High School, the 5-foot-11, 185-pounder compiled 1,512 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns for the Cardinals during his senior season.

The multi-sport star was a two-time 4A state 100- and 200-meter state champion and was named the Gatorade male track and field athlete of the year for the state of Arkansas. He holds the 4A state meet record in the 100 (10.70), but ran a 10.66 and a 21.47 in the 100 and 200 respectively in the Meet of Champions. He also had a career batting average of .385 in baseball.
